The Dodgers’ injury pileup has already forced a few moving parts, and now two more pitchers are headed back into the mix with altered jobs attached.
Justin Wrobleski and Edwin Díaz both landed on the injured list last week, and both are expected to return soon. But the roles waiting for them are not the same. Wrobleski is being shifted into the bullpen, while Díaz will have to earn his way back into the closer chair.
For Wrobleski, the change sounds like a more lasting one. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said the plan is to use him as a long reliever.
“I see him slotting into relief and being sort of a two-to-three-inning guy,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said.
Wrobleski had been a steady presence in the rotation since April 6, but the Dodgers’ pitching picture is changing fast. Tarik Skubal is in the mix, Tyler Glasnow is set to return on Tuesday and Shohei Ohtani is starting to build up, leaving the rotation crowded and making the bullpen route a natural fit.
Díaz’s situation is different. The Dodgers are not handing him the ninth inning right away this time, even though that was the approach the last time he came off the IL. Roberts said the team wants to see more from the 32-year-old before putting him back in the closer role.
“I think that it’s more of getting him back healthy, and then putting him in some softer landing situations to get the confidence, to get the feel, and the trust of executing pitches, getting Major League hitters out, and then at that point in time, we’ll go from there,” Roberts explained.
That reset comes after a season that has been uneven for Díaz, who has made only 16 appearances and is now on his second IL stint. The Dodgers still view the latest absence as potentially useful beyond just healing the neck inflammation.
“The sensation, the feeling that he had in his neck, is real,” Roberts began. “But I also do think that going through some things with the pitching guys and then the body mechanics guys and getting to let that have a chance to take, I think is important.”
Roberts said both pitchers should be back quickly once they are eligible, and that their IL stays may not be long.
“I would say that both those guys, once we get to September, is a conversation. I mean, when they’re both eligible to come off. I think that it should be short-lived for both those guys, as far as the time on the IL,” Roberts said.
Wrobleski is dealing with left forearm inflammation, while Díaz is sidelined by neck inflammation.
