Los Angeles took all six meetings with Washington this season, but the final two games were anything but routine. The Dodgers needed rallies on Saturday and Sunday to stay alive, and Tommy Edman and Mookie Betts delivered the big blows. Their game-winning, three-run home runs in the seventh inning or later made MLB history, according to OPTA Stats.
OPTA Stats said the Dodgers became the first team to hit multiple game-winning, three-run home runs with two outs in the seventh inning or later over back-to-back games. The account also noted that Los Angeles is the first team in MLB history to hit a 2-out, game-winning 3+ run HR while trailing in the 7th inning or later in back-to-back games.
The weekend surge came right after Teoscar Hernández hit a walk-off double that kept the St. Louis Cardinals from sweeping their three-game set at Dodger Stadium. Hernández, Edman and Betts have all been showing more at the plate lately, and some of that production arrived while Shohei Ohtani missed four straight games because of left knee, right bicep and neck trouble.
Edman’s swing on Saturday came after he had already made a strong defensive play, catching a ball at the wall in left-center field. His three-run homer in the seventh inning gave the Dodgers the lead, but he wasn’t interested in turning the moment into a personal headline.
“I’m just excited we got the win. Good, hard-fought win.
A lot of intense moments in that game, a lot of big moments from a lot of guys,” Edman said. “Anything we can do to win ballgames is especially important in this part of the year.”
Betts followed with his own decisive shot on Sunday, launching a homer in the eighth inning to put the Dodgers ahead. The blast also stretched his on-base streak to 16 games. Over that span, Betts is hitting .323/.413/.538 with five doubles, three home runs and 16 RBI.
Betts has said the recent run has been tied to past stretches where he had to work through struggles and keep his mindset steady.
The comeback victory was the Dodgers’ 41st of the season, leaving them second only to the Arizona Diamondbacks, who have 43.
