The Dodgers made a quiet September 1 move that said plenty about where they stand with Teoscar Hernández: they did not bring up an outfielder when rosters expanded, and they even sent Alek Thomas back to the minors. In other words, the club is sticking with the corner outfield setup it has, and manager Dave Roberts made the thinking plain on Tuesday.
“We didn’t bring up an outfielder. That’s part of the bet on Teo, that he can right the ship,” Roberts said. “That’s kind of where we’re at.”
Hernández has started to answer that bet. After delivering the go-ahead home run in the Dodgers’ August 30 win in Detroit, he carried that momentum into the opening week of the homestand. Over his last seven games, Hernández has 11 hits in 26 at-bats for a .423 average, along with a home run, three doubles, four walks, and eight RBI.
The quality of contact has backed up the results. Since last Sunday, 14 of Hernández’s 21 batted balls have been hard-hit, and 13 have left the bat at 100 mph or harder.
The improvement ties back to a swing he used effectively in 2024 and early in 2025 before injuries made it hard to keep repeating the mechanics. Now that he’s healthier, Hernández explained to Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register what changed.
“Last year, I used it before I had the injury. That’s the way I was hitting,” said Hernandez, who got off to an excellent start in 2025.
“Then when I came back, I was doing the same thing but I was feeling it (in his injured leg) so that’s why I stopped. This year when I got my hamstring issue, I had to get rid of it because it was putting so much pressure on the hamstring.
Beyond the big-league roster, the Dodgers’ September 1 decisions also kept the focus on the farm. In their Down on the Farm newsletter, Owen Riley and Maxfield Lane went through several prospects who were and weren’t called up, including James Tibbs, who is not eligible for the Rule 5 Draft this December, and Josue De Paula, who is. Both acknowledged De Paula’s defensive issues, but each still argued for the Dodgers to promote the 21-year-old directly from Tulsa.
Riley was especially bullish on De Paula’s bat and overall offensive profile, writing that he is too advanced for Double-A and stressing his contact quality and power production. He also pointed to De Paula as a potentially useful October piece, even while labeling him a high-risk, high-reward option.
Kevin Baxter of the Los Angeles Times also profiled Dodgers chairman and owner Mark Walter, who is currently under federal investigation for his insurance dealings. One detail from that piece lined up with previous reporting that the Dodgers are not for sale. A source close to Walter, who was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly, said Walter would consider selling Chelsea if the terms were right, but had no desire to sell the Sparks, the PWHL, his professional squash investment, or his stake in the Dodgers.
