Tarik Skubal has been in Los Angeles for barely a month, but he’s already buying into Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s world.
On Thursday, September 17th, Skubal was seen alongside Yamamoto and his translator throwing the javelin, the same unusual training staple that has become part of the Japanese star’s routine ahead of the Dodgers’ game against the Reds. For a pitcher known for his own meticulous approach, it was another sign that Skubal is paying close attention to the habits around him.
Yamamoto’s preparation has drawn attention inside the clubhouse because it goes well beyond the usual pregame work. His routine leans heavily on flexibility and motion-based techniques, and the javelin toss is one of its most recognizable pieces. The workout traces back to personal trainer Osamu Yada, who began working with Yamamoto when he was a teenager in Japan.
That connection has reached other Dodgers, too. Yada, known around the club as “Yada Sensei,” has also worked with Mookie Betts during the spring.
“I’m not fully in his whole routine,” Betts said of Yada. “But I wake up every morning and do my stretch routine that Sensei showed me, throwing the javelins every day.
“I think throwing javelins is the reason why I can make a play in the hole like that and throw it in the air on a line. I’m really grateful for Yoshi and Sensei, because they have definitely changed my perspective, changed my life, changed my game.”
Skubal’s interest in Yamamoto wasn’t a one-time curiosity, either. When he first joined the team, he made it clear he was already impressed by what he saw.
“Yoshi’s process is nuts too, you know. I think that what he does is insane too, and watching his bullpens, the preparation is second to none,” Skubal told Dodgers Nation.
Yamamoto has said those workouts are a big reason he’s been able to pitch frequently while avoiding serious injuries so far. If Skubal ends up getting anything out of the javelin too, Yada Sensei’s reputation only gets bigger.
