Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has shared some encouraging news about utility player Hyeseong Kim, who is set to rejoin the team after Team Korea's exit from the World Baseball Classic (WBC).
Kim, alongside former Dodger Hyun-Jin Ryu, was part of a Korean squad that faced a tough defeat at the hands of the Dominican Republic. The Dominicans have been a powerhouse throughout the WBC, showcasing their flair with explosive home runs and an infectious energy.
Korea's journey to the quarterfinals was commendable, especially after a nail-biting loss to Chinese Taipei had them on the brink of elimination.
Kim's performance in the tournament was a bit of a rollercoaster, as he managed just one hit in 12 at-bats, though that lone hit was a memorable home run. Despite the struggles, he's now back with the Dodgers in Arizona and ready to make an impact.
Roberts confirmed that Kim will be in the lineup for one of the split-squad games against the Chicago Cubs on Sunday. With a short flight from Miami, Kim should have ample time to rest and prepare to don Dodger Blue once more.
During the WBC, Kim had a brief setback with a left-hand injury against Team Australia on March 8. However, he only missed one game before returning to face the Dominican Republic, assuring everyone that the injury wouldn't affect his MLB season readiness.
Back in camp, the Dodgers will have the opportunity to assess Kim's health and ensure he's fully fit. The left-handed hitter is in a competitive race for playing time at second base, vying with Miguel Rojas and Santiago Espinal, as Tommy Edman recovers from ankle surgery.
Kim is expected to be a key part of the Opening Day roster, especially after an impressive Spring Training before his WBC departure. Reflecting on his progress, Kim noted, “I found out some of the things that I needed to work on. I just want to work hard and make sure that I make the roster right off the bat after spring training.”
After starting his rookie year in the minors in 2025, Kim's full offseason preparation has set the stage for a promising season ahead.
