Cristopher Sanchez has been a force for the Philadelphia Phillies all season, and the first half of 2026 was strong enough to earn him the National League start in the 2026 MLB All-Star Game. But the biggest storyline around the left-hander has been the split that’s followed him everywhere: he’s been a completely different pitcher at Citizens Bank Park than he has been on the road.
That contrast matters now, because Sanchez is set to open a measuring-stick series for Philadelphia against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Phillies dropped two of three to the New York Mets in their first series after the break, and now they’re staring at the two-time defending World Series champions with Sanchez getting the ball first.
At home, he’s been nearly untouchable. In 11 first-half starts at Citizens Bank Park, Sanchez went 7-1 with a 0.86 ERA and a 0.932 WHIP across 73 innings. He gave up just 50 hits, only two of them homers, and walked 18 while allowing 10 runs total, seven earned.
The results at the plate tell the same story. Opponents managed only a .188/.242/.241 line in 286 plate appearances against him in Philadelphia. In that setting, he has looked every bit like a Cy Young Award favorite.
The road version has been far less forgiving. In nine starts away from Citizens Bank Park, Sanchez is 4-3 with a 4.97 ERA and a 1.528 WHIP in 54.1 innings, striking out 59.
Opposing hitters have punished him to the tune of a .330/.351/.526 slash line, with 10 home runs. His tOPS+ and sOPS+ allowed are both 161 and 138.
The game flow has followed the same pattern. Sanchez hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in any home start, but he’s given up at least two earned runs in seven of his nine road outings, including four starts in which he was charged with four or more. On July 6 against the Kansas City Royals, he was tagged for nine earned runs - more than he has allowed in all 11 of his home starts combined.
Whatever is driving the split, the Phillies need to get it sorted out. If Philadelphia is going to chase a World Series title in 2026, Sanchez is going to have to be reliable away from home too.
