Rui Hachimura Had A Lot To Say After Facing The Lakers

Rui Hachimura shares insights on his impactful Lakers tenure and reveals the camaraderie behind his exchanges with Luka Doncic during the Clippers game.

Rui Hachimura’s first game against the Lakers since leaving them for the Clippers came with a familiar feel on Friday night.

The former Lakers forward said he enjoyed seeing his old teammates and staff again, and he made it clear the reunion meant something to him.

“Yeah, it feels good,” Hachimura said, via Justin Russo. “I miss all those guys, the players, the coaches.

They got some new guys, but the trainers and all that. Yeah, it was good to see them.

It was literally after the last season, so it was a great moment with them. And yeah, I talk some stuff with them, too.

So, yeah, it was a fun time.”

Hachimura joined the Lakers from the Washington Wizards in January 2023 and spent three and a half seasons with the franchise. He became a well-liked role player during that stretch, but in the summer he learned Los Angeles would not be bringing him back in free agency.

That sent him into the market, where he ultimately chose to remain in the same city. Hachimura signed a two-year, $28 million deal with the Clippers, which includes a $14 million team option for 2027-28.

The move put him on the other side of the rivalry almost immediately, and the Lakers made sure the reunion was a warm one. Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves were especially happy to see him on Friday.

Hachimura’s return game wasn’t one to remember on the stat sheet. He finished with 16 points on 5-14 shooting, along with six rebounds, one assist and two steals, as the Clippers fell 125-117.

Still, he spoke warmly about his time with the Lakers afterward.

“It was amazing,” Hachimura said. “I had a great time with them… Of course I missed them, but it was time to move on.

Yeah, I think it was special, my four years, four seasons with them. I’m happy with the Clippers right now.”

He’s made it clear he’s excited about this new chapter, and Friday served as a reminder that some old ties still matter even after a team change.

Hachimura also addressed the back-and-forth with Doncic during the game. The Japanese forward said the chatter was nothing more than trash talk.

“He was just trying to talk trash or whatever,” Hachimura said. “But I don’t care about that stuff.

Me and him, I had a good time with him, two years with the Lakers. I’m happy to see him.

He’s healthy, back on the court.”

Doncic, for his part, sounded happy to see Hachimura too. He reportedly wanted the Lakers to re-sign him, and after the game he spoke fondly of his former teammate.

“I don’t like Rui,” Doncic said, via The Sporting Tribune. “No, it was just great to see him.

That’s my guy. We had one and a half years together; we’re great friends.

So it was very nice to see him.”

The two won’t have to wait long for the next meeting. The Lakers and Clippers play again on Wednesday, the second of four matchups between the Pacific Division rivals this season.

Clippers Let Lakers Control Night Behind A Performance Fans Will Hate

The Clippers spent much of the night watching the Lakers set the terms in a 125-117 loss, a result that had more to do with Los Angeles control than a late push. Austin Reaves was at the center of it, repeatedly bending the game with his playmaking and shot-making while the Lakers got enough help from the rest of the rotation to keep the pressure on.

Walker Kessler also loomed large, giving the Lakers a defensive backbone with rim protection and activity that made life harder for the Clippers around the basket. Matisse Thybulle, Ziaire Williams and Quentin Grimes each added useful minutes as the Lakers built a performance that felt balanced, efficient and frustratingly complete from the Clippers side. Clippers Scandal Just Put Steve Ballmer Back In The Spotlight

The NBAs investigation into the Clippers finally closed with a sweeping set of punishments tied to salary cap circumvention involving Kawhi Leonard, putting Steve Ballmer squarely back in the spotlight. League officials handed down suspensions for Ballmer and other executives, and the penalties also included the loss of first-round draft picks over a five-year span, a harsh reminder of how seriously the league viewed the matter.

For the Clippers, the fallout extends well beyond the original deal-making around Leonard, who was later traded to the Toronto Raptors before these punishments were announced. Leonard was fined, his uncle was banned from NBA business, and Ballmer now has to operate under a one-year suspension that keeps him away from contact with the team, leaving the franchise to absorb the practical and public hit from a scandal that has lingered for years. Kawhi Leonard Just Reopened A Clippers Scandal Fans Havent Forgotten

Kawhi Leonard had a lighthearted moment in Toronto on Sunday night, even if the backdrop was anything but light for Clippers fans. During the Raptors' win over the Wizards, Leonard was met by a courtside heckler who brought up the Aspiration scandal, a reminder of the cap-circumvention mess that once tied his name to Los Angeles and still lingers around the franchise.

Leonard has long been able to separate himself from that chapter, taking only a minor fine while the Clippers absorbed the real fallout and he moved on to Toronto. But any time his name gets dragged back into the scandal, it reopens an old wound for the organization and keeps the focus on how much damage that episode did, even as Leonard has tried to put it behind him.
