When a seasoned veteran like Nicolas Batum speaks, you listen. At 37, Batum has seen it all in nearly two decades on the court.
But sometimes, it’s not the rings or the paychecks that linger in memory-it’s the “what ifs.” Enter Tyrese Maxey.
This young Sixers guard has left an indelible mark on Batum, one that resonates deeply, especially since Batum’s son is a huge fan.
In a candid moment on “The Old Man and the Three” podcast, Batum shared a rare regret: not having more time on the court with Maxey. He reflected, “If I have one regret, I wish I could have played longer with him.
Maybe the only regret I would have in my career is like, I wish I could have played maybe longer with him. When I was younger-I was maybe too old now to play with him-but I wish I could be younger and play with him longer.”
It’s clear that Maxey’s impact goes beyond the game; Batum’s son even has his room decked out with Maxey jerseys.
Batum joined the Philadelphia 76ers during the 2023-24 season, part of the James Harden trade, and quickly saw Maxey’s potential. He praised Maxey’s underrated playmaking and leadership, drawing comparisons to the legendary Allen Iverson. For Batum, the talent was undeniable, but the timing was just off.
Maxey’s performance in the 2025-26 season has been nothing short of spectacular. Averaging nearly 29 points a night, he’s built on his breakout 25.9 points per game that earned him All-Star and Most Improved Player honors.
But it’s not just about scoring-his all-around game has flourished. With 6.7 assists, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.0 steals per game, Maxey’s efficiency is up too, shooting 46.1% from the field and nearly 90% from the line.
The milestones keep stacking up. A first-time All-Star starter in 2026, surpassing Allen Iverson in franchise threes, and a jaw-dropping 54-point game against Milwaukee. Defensively, he’s a force to be reckoned with, causing chaos on the court.
Maxey’s rise is a testament to his hard work and talent, and while Batum may wish for more time alongside him, it’s clear that Maxey’s journey is just beginning.
