Keaton Wagler’s second summer league outing looked nothing like his first, and that was the point.
After an ugly debut that raised real questions about his pace and overall comfort level, the fifth overall pick answered in a big way against Darryn Peterson and the Utah Jazz. Wagler finished with 23 points, four assists, and a steal, going 6-16 from the field and 4-7 from deep. For a 19-year-old coming off a rough first impression, that’s about as clean a response as you can draw up.
The night didn’t start smoothly. Even with Wagler taking more aggressive shots at all three levels, the ball wasn’t dropping early, and he still looked uneasy in the matchup with Peterson, who has been one of the best rookies so far. But the third quarter changed everything.
Wagler found his spots, made the right reads, and suddenly took over. He scored 18 of the LA Clippers’ 42 points in the quarter on 5-8 shooting, flipping the feel of the game in a hurry. By then, the player who had been picked apart after his first summer league run looked far more like the confident offensive threat the Clippers drafted.
He also had a case for an even bigger night. Had the coaching staff let him stay in to open the fourth, he might have had a shot at joining the short list of rookies who’ve hit 30 points in summer league.
Instead, Wagler settled for something almost as valuable: a statement game. He outplayed Peterson on both ends in a 22-point blowout win, quieted plenty of the noise from his debut, and gave the Clippers something to build on as they move toward game three against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Clippers Fans Suddenly Have A Real Reason To Worry About Kawhi
Kawhi Leonards future has suddenly become a lot more complicated for Clippers fans, even with a deal in place that would send Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick and draft compensation back to Los Angeles. The move has been framed as a major swing for both sides, and Leonards recent production only adds to the sense that this is the kind of transaction that can reshape a roster in a hurry.
For now, though, the trade is not moving cleanly through the finish line. The league is looking into Leonards salary cap situation, and until that gets sorted out, there is at least some reason for everyone involved to keep one eye on the fine print. Both teams still sound confident the agreement will eventually go through, but until it does, Clippers supporters are left waiting on a deal that already feels much bigger than a routine offseason swap. Clippers Fans Are Suddenly Buzzing About What Wagler Just Sparked
The Clippers are using Las Vegas Summer League the way plenty of teams do this time of year, as a first real look at young players who might matter later, and Keaton Wagler has become one of the names worth watching. The recent first-round pick out of Illinois had been working through a slow start to the tournament, but he flashed the kind of scoring burst that can change the mood around a prospect quickly and give the front office a clearer sense of what it has.
For a team with bigger questions hanging around the roster and its future, every encouraging Summer League performance gets magnified a little more. Waglers rise comes as the Leonard trade to Toronto remains on hold amid the NBA investigation tied to Leonards deal with Aspiration, while the next Clippers schedule release is still a month away. In the meantime, the summer stage is offering the clearest glimpse yet of what might be coming next. [Read more 🡒]
