Kawhi Leonard’s knee injury is turning into a much longer problem for the Toronto Raptors than anyone first thought.
Leonard was originally expected to miss only about a week after swelling in his left knee forced him out of Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Raptors said Tuesday that tests showed no acute injury in the knee, but the latest update points to a far more serious absence.
“Toronto Raptors star Kawhi Leonard (knee) is expected to be sidelined for at least 3-4 weeks, sources tell me,” Chris Haynes posted Thursday.
That timeline is a tough one for Toronto, which had been watching Leonard settle in and start to build chemistry with his new teammates. The two-time NBA champion now appears headed for a stretch that could keep him out for close to a month.
Leonard’s return to Toronto was one of the biggest storylines of the summer for a Raptors team trying to push back into championship conversations. The trade bringing him back from the LA Clippers was made official in mid-September after a lengthy delay tied to the NBA’s investigation into the Clippers for salary cap circumvention.
“The trade sending Kawhi Leonard from the LA Clippers to Toronto has been made official after a monthslong delay due to the NBA's investigation into the Clippers for salary cap circumvention. The teams initially agreed to the deal on June 30, but it was paused while the league investigated allegations the Clippers violated salary cap rules in signing Leonard as a free agent," ESPN's Shams Charania wrote.
Now Toronto is waiting again, this time for Leonard’s knee to calm down. Once he’s ready, the focus will shift back to helping the Raptors chase the kind of success that made his return such a major move in the first place.

Clippers Got Bullied In Every Important Area Against The Lakers
The Lakers spent most of the night making the Clippers look small in the places that usually decide a game. Quentin Grimes led Los Angeles with 23 points in a 103-87 win, and the supporting cast did plenty of the heavy lifting too, with Collin Sexton, Sandro Mamukelashvili, Matisse Thybulle and Walker Kessler all helping tilt the game in the Lakers favor. The edge showed up everywhere that mattered, from the paint to the glass to the open floor.
For the Clippers, the numbers told a frustrating story because they could not protect the ball or recover enough second-chance opportunities to keep pace. The Lakers turned the game into a physical, turnover-heavy slog and made sure the Clippers paid for every mistake, which is exactly the sort of loss that lingers because it exposes so many problems at once. How quickly the Clippers clean that up will say a lot about whether this was just a bad night or a warning sign. [Read more 🡒]
Pacers Suddenly Have A Ben Sheppard Problem They Didn't Expect
The Clippers are still piecing together their own rotation picture as the road schedule approaches, with several familiar names working back from injury. Max Strus, Brandon Ingram and Yanic Konan Niederhauser are all staying in Los Angeles for rehab, leaving the team to manage depth and lineup flexibility a little longer than it would like.
There is at least one welcome note on the horizon, though. Rui Hachimura is expected to join the upcoming road trip after sitting out with left quad soreness, which gives the Clippers a chance to add another healthy body as they try to steady the group away from home. For a team already navigating absences, every returning piece matters, even if the full picture still is not quite settled. [Read more 🡒]
Clippers Just Sent A Troubling Message About Their Injured Roster
The Clippers have turned to Blake Wesley on a 10-day contract, an early-season move that speaks to how thin the roster has become. Signed under a hardship exception, Wesley is back with Los Angeles after being waived following training camp, giving the team another guard option as it tries to navigate a stretch of absences.
The timing matters because the Clippers had to qualify for the exception by showing multiple players had already missed three straight games, a sign the injury situation is not just a one-night issue. Wesley is set to be with the team through November 7, and if the roster picture does not improve, there is a path for L.A. to keep him around a little longer. [Read more 🡒]
