Darius Garland Just Sent Cavaliers Fans A Clear Message After Leaving

Darius Garland is determined to lead the Clippers with renewed energy, fueled by lessons and motivations from his past tenure with the Cavaliers.

Darius Garland says the move to the Clippers has helped him rediscover his joy. It has not, however, erased what he felt when his time in Cleveland came to an end.

When Marc J. Spears of Andscape asked Garland whether he still carries a chip from the Cavaliers, the answer came fast.

“Yeah, 1,000%,” he said. “It wasn’t even the trade.

It was just everything that happened. Everybody thought that I was just out of the league, basically.

But now I’m trying to get that spark back, trying to get back to the All-Star level that I’m used to being at.”

Garland, 26, spent nearly seven seasons with Cleveland, made two All-Star teams and was part of the push that helped turn the Cavaliers from a rebuilding club into a contender. Injuries then interrupted that run, and Cleveland dealt him to Los Angeles in February for James Harden.

Now he’s stepping into a very different role with the Clippers. Kawhi Leonard is gone, Brandon Ingram will miss the start of the season, and Garland is taking on the kind of responsibility that comes with being the team’s lead guard.

“It’s definitely something that I want,” he told Spears. “I think I’ve been through a lot in this career and I think I’m ready to take on the reins of that, especially Year 8. I think I’ve actually found myself a little bit, and I know where I want to get to.”

Garland also made it clear he understands the adjustment ahead for a roster still coming together.

“Be patient.”

“It’s a lot going on right now,” Garland said. “Got a lot of new faces coming in, so we definitely have to be patient. Got to work through a lot of bumps and bruises, even though we want to win games at a high rate.”

He said his troublesome toes are healthy after an offseason of rehab. Former Cavaliers teammate Max Strus is with him again, though Strus was injured five minutes into the preseason opener.

The Clippers may need time before everything clicks. Garland, though, sounds eager to see how far this version of himself can push them - and he’s not letting go of that Cleveland chip anytime soon.

Clippers Just Lost More Control In The Kawhi Leonard Saga

Kawhi Leonards return to Toronto is finally official, closing another chapter in a saga that has stretched far beyond the usual trade paperwork. The deal had been held up while the NBA investigated the Clippers salary cap practices, and only after that delay did the Raptors complete the acquisition and move forward with Leonard as the centerpiece of their latest run.

Leonard has already started talking like a player settling back in rather than one still looking back, saying his focus is on learning the team and helping as a veteran presence. For the Clippers, though, the bigger issue is the shrinking amount of control they have left in a story that once seemed centered on them and now feels increasingly out of their hands. [Read more 🡒]

Gradey Dick Faces A Huge Clippers Opportunity He Can't Waste

Gradey Dick arrives in Los Angeles with something he did not have much of in Toronto: a clean slate and a real opening to play. The Clippers brought him in as part of the Kawhi Leonard trade, and with injuries thinning the early-season rotation, he should get the kind of minutes that can quickly change how the organization views him. After a modest run with the Raptors, this is the sort of chance young players talk about when they say they just need an opportunity.

For the Clippers, the evaluation is simple and the timeline is not. Dicks early work in this new environment could shape whether he sticks as part of their long-term plans or becomes a name they shop before the deadline. There is room for him right now, and there is pressure attached to it, because teams rarely wait long when a player is trying to prove himself on a short-term deal. [Read more 🡒]
