Clippers Leave Yuki Kawamura Facing An Uncertain Next Step

Despite being waived by the Clippers, Yuki Kawamura receives both encouragement and caution from NBA star Rui Hachimura as he considers his next steps in professional basketball.

With the Clippers trimming their roster ahead of the NBA’s opening night deadline, Yuki Kawamura became one of the latest names to get cut.

Los Angeles announced it has waived the Japanese point guard, who had been on an Exhibit 10 deal. Kawamura flashed plenty in a short stay with the team, bringing hustle and court vision to the floor, but his time with the Clippers has now ended.

For Rui Hachimura, though, the move carried added weight. The fellow Japanese national team player didn’t exactly sugarcoat his response when asked about Kawamura’s departure:

“He really worked hard during training camp, so I want him to keep that up. Also, while chasing your dream is important, you have to make smart decisions. He’s already 25 years old, so I want him to keep that in mind as he moves forward.”

Hachimura offered encouragement, but the message also had a practical edge. Kawamura’s path to sticking in the NBA has always been an uphill climb, and his size - 5’7″ - makes that even tougher.

The article also notes that he passed up much larger offers from the Japanese B. League to chase his NBA dream, which adds another layer to the decision-making Hachimura was talking about.

What comes next looks a lot more likely to be a G League situation than an immediate NBA landing spot. Kawamura is now a free agent, and while another roster opening this late in the process would be a long shot, there’s a growing expectation that he could wind up with the San Diego Clippers, Los Angeles’ G League affiliate.

Tyronn Lue made it clear he’d be happy to keep him in the organization. The Clippers head coach said:

“I would love to have him… He’s a very good player. I don’t think he gets a fair chance a lot because of his height and size.

But he’s a damn good basketball player. So, what he’s been able to show and prove since he’s been here, you saw it the other night in the Toronto game.

He’s been very good. So, it’d be good to have him around.”

That Toronto game is the one that really put Kawamura on the map in this brief Clippers stint. After a quiet preseason debut against the Warriors, he got a bigger run Saturday night and made it count, finishing with 10 points, four assists and two steals in nearly 15 minutes. He shot 3-4 from the field and 1-2 from beyond the arc in a 114-106 loss.

Even with the waiver, that performance left a mark. Kawamura’s G League track record only adds to the case for another run with the organization, as he averaged 14.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, 8.7 assists and 1.1 steals there. For now, the Clippers have moved on, but the door appears to be open for him to keep working in San Diego.

Clippers Roster Squeeze Just Put More Pressure On Final Camp Battle

The Clippers are already trimming around the edges of a crowded training camp, and Cam Christie became the latest casualty as the team moved to get its roster down to the leagues 15-player limit. Christie, the 46th pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, had been part of the teams effort to sort through its back end before the season, but the numbers game has forced Los Angeles to make a quick decision.

Christies departure comes only shortly after the Clippers cut Yuki Kawamura, though coach Tyronn Lue suggested Kawamuras time with the team may not be finished. For now, the squeeze only makes the final camp battle more pointed, with every remaining decision carrying added weight as the Clippers try to shape the last spot on the roster and preserve the flexibility they want heading into the season. Jahmyl Telfort Faces One Last Fight For A Clippers Roster Spot

The Clippers have already trimmed part of their camp roster, and the back end of the roster is where the real intrigue now sits. With Yuki Kawamura and Cam Christie waived, Jahmyl Telfort and Fletcher Loyer are the two names left in the mix for the final two-way contract, a spot that can still matter plenty for a team trying to keep developmental options close at hand. Telfort is currently on an Exhibit-10 deal, and he has given the staff something to think about with encouraging preseason play.

Fletcher Loyer arrived more recently on a tryout arrangement, which only sharpens the comparison for the coaching staff. Tyronn Lue and the front office still have one more look before they have to make the call, and the preseason finale against Denver will go a long way in shaping which player gets the edge. For both players, it is a simple but high-stakes audition, with a two-way contract hanging in the balance. [Read more 🡒]
