The Clippers have turned to Los Angeles attorney John Gibson to guide the franchise through Steve Ballmer’s one-year suspension, naming him interim governor and CEO after the NBA signed off on the move.
ESPN reported that Ballmer nominated Gibson for the roles, and the league approved him. The Clippers later confirmed the appointment. In his new post, Gibson will handle both basketball and business operations and represent the team at NBA Board of Governors meetings.
“My focus will be on supporting our people, providing steady leadership, and helping the organization continue to move forward,” Gibson said in the team’s announcement.
Gibson brings a long legal résumé to the job. He spent more than 35 years practicing law, worked as a litigation partner at DLA Piper, and later joined the Clippers. He is also a longtime season-ticket holder.
This is not a ceremonial title. Ballmer was barred from all team activities after a league investigation found the Clippers had circumvented the salary cap by arranging “no-show” endorsement agreements for former star Kawhi Leonard. The NBA also took away five draft picks from Los Angeles.
Ballmer remains the majority owner, but he cannot run the team during the suspension.
The Clippers did not tap minority owner and alternate governor Dennis Wong, who was not punished by the NBA but was reportedly tied to a 2022 investment in Aspiration, one of the companies at the center of the Leonard situation.
That leaves Gibson as the public face of a franchise still working through the fallout. His role goes beyond keeping things moving; he has been asked to steady an organization whose ownership decisions are still under the microscope.
