The Chris Paul situation in Los Angeles has officially entered strange territory. Not because he's injured or mulling retirement-at least not publicly-but because he’s still technically a Clipper… while very much not part of the team.
Let’s rewind for a second. Back in the offseason, Paul re-signed with the Clippers, a move that made sense at the time.
Veteran leadership, elite playmaking, and a proven presence in the locker room-Paul checked all the boxes for a team with championship aspirations. But fast-forward to now, and CP3 hasn’t suited up since early December.
The team sent him home, and since then? Crickets.
No trade. No release.
No buyout. Just silence.
The initial holdup made sense. NBA rules prevent recently signed players from being traded until Dec. 15, and Paul fell into that category. But we're well past that date now, and with the trade deadline looming-less than two weeks away-the Clippers still haven’t made a move.
So what’s the holdup?
From the Clippers’ perspective, a trade would be the ideal outcome. Even if they’re only getting back a second-round pick or salary filler, it’s better than cutting ties for nothing. But the longer this drags out, the more it feels like the market for Paul might be lukewarm at best.
And then there’s the other side of the equation: Does Chris Paul still want to play?
That’s the question nobody seems to have an answer for. At 38, Paul’s not the player he once was, but he can still run an offense, hit big shots, and mentor younger talent.
There’s value there-especially for a contender looking to add playoff experience and poise. But if he’s not pushing for a trade or buyout, and if teams aren’t lining up to make a move, it raises real questions about what comes next.
