Clippers Face A Risky Porzingis Debate With Draft Pressure Growing

In a bold move to secure their future, the Clippers could leverage the Warriors' position on Porzingis to snag a potential game-changing draft pick.

Kristaps Porzingis is exactly the kind of trade target most teams would rather avoid, but for the LA Clippers, the math changes if the Golden State Warriors are desperate enough to attach a future unprotected first-round pick.

Porzingis recently signed a two-year, $40 million extension with Golden State, but he was later found to be sidelined for the foreseeable future because of “recurring symptoms from the autoimmune condition termed as POTS,” according to Shams Charania. That leaves the Warriors searching for a way out of a contract that, as the source material puts it, almost nobody would want to absorb.

Normally, the Clippers should steer clear. There’s real uncertainty about whether Porzingis will get back on the floor, and his $20 million annual salary brings plenty of risk.

But the situation is different now because of the cap-circumvention investigation involving Kawhi Leonard, which left the Clippers without five first-round picks. That loss has forced them to think differently about how to rebuild draft capital.

Taking on an unwanted deal could be the price of doing business if it comes with a valuable pick attached.

Golden State is not being framed here like Oklahoma City or San Antonio - clubs at the top of the Western Conference with championship timelines that stretch into the future. Instead, the Warriors are viewed as a team moving toward a rebuild once Stephen Curry and Draymond Green are done, which could make their draft assets more appealing. If the Clippers land an unprotected first from that post-Curry and Green stretch, the payoff could be a strong one down the line.

It’s not the cleanest way to add a future asset, but given where the Clippers stand and how much cap space they’re expected to have, it’s a route worth considering.

Clippers Were On The Floor For A Frightening OKC Moment

The night turned grim late in the fourth quarter when Jalen Williams went down on a landing attempt and had to be taken off the floor on a stretcher. The Clippers were on the court for the frightening moment, which quickly shifted the focus away from the game and toward the health of one of Oklahoma Citys most important players.

Thunder coach Mark Daigneault confirmed the injury after the game, though he stopped short of offering specifics beyond saying the team was not doing great. For Oklahoma City, it was the kind of blow that can reshape a season, and for the Clippers it left a hard-to-shake scene from a game that will be remembered for all the wrong reasons. [Read more 🡒]

Luka Doncic And Rui Hachimura Added Heat To Lakers Clippers Win

The first of four meetings between the Lakers and Clippers this season already had the feel of a spring matchup, with Los Angeles taking the opener in a game defined as much by sloppiness as shot-making. The Clippers gave the ball away 26 times, and the Lakers turned those mistakes into 33 points, a swing that did plenty of the heavy lifting in a rivalry game that never really found a clean rhythm.

Luka Doncic still found a way to influence the outcome despite an uneven night offensively, finishing with 23 points, six rebounds and seven assists. Rui Hachimura added 16 points in his return to face his former team, and the postgame chatter had a little extra edge after the two crossed paths repeatedly during the game, adding another layer to a matchup that already figures to stay heated all season.
