The NBA has cleared the way for John Gibson to step into a major leadership role with the Clippers, approving the Los Angeles lawyer as the team’s interim governor and CEO after Steve Ballmer put his name forward, according to Shams Charania of ESPN.
Gibson’s appointment comes after Ballmer, the Clippers’ governor and majority owner, was suspended from all team-related activities for the next year. That punishment followed an NBA investigation led by Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, which concluded the Clippers skirted the salary cap in order to pay former star forward Kawhi Leonard through a series of “no-show” endorsement deals.
The team said in a press release that Gibson will take over immediately. His responsibilities will include overseeing both the business and basketball sides of the organization, and he will also represent the Clippers at NBA Board of Governors meetings.
“I am honored to take on this responsibility and grateful for the opportunity to serve an organization I have supported many years,” said Gibson, a longtime Clippers season ticket holder. “The Clippers have talented players, coaches, and staff, an extraordinary home in Intuit Dome, and passionate Clippers nation fans who, like me, care deeply about this team.
“My focus will be on supporting our people, providing steady leadership, and helping the organization continue to move forward.”
The release also noted that Gibson brings more than 35 years of legal experience, including work as a “nationally recognized trial lawyer and litigation partner at DLA Piper” in Los Angeles before joining the Clippers.
One notable wrinkle in all of this: Ballmer did not turn to Dennis Wong, the team’s lone minority owner and alternate governor, for the interim role. Wong was not punished by the league, but he reportedly played a significant part in helping funnel money to Leonard in December 2022 by making an investment in Aspiration, even though the company’s independent auditor, KPMG, had already resigned and the firm was facing lawsuits worth millions over missed payments.
Aspiration sat at the center of the salary cap circumvention case first reported last September by investigative journalist and podcaster Pablo Torre. The Clippers remain under Department of Justice investigation over their dealings with Leonard.
