Chris Paul says the way his Clippers tenure ended was the most “disrespectful” experience he’s dealt with in a long NBA career.
On the “Build or Break” podcast, Paul opened up about the final chapter of his time in Los Angeles, where he had hoped for a finish worthy of his standing as one of the league’s great point guards and the greatest Clippers player ever. Instead, the reunion unraveled quickly, with tension building from the start before the team eventually moved on from him and he announced his retirement a few months later.
“What’s interesting about that whole situation is, it’s probably one of the most disrespectful things that I’ve endured,” said Paul on the ‘Build or Break’ podcast. “I’ve been through a lot of wild stuff in my career, and having older kids and a wife who’s very tapped in, and they know the daily goings-on as far as that team and that organization.
Obviously, I was upset, but my family, my people, everybody… I think just because of the investment we made in the team for as long as we have, and to see the way stuff was handled. What it lets you know is that no matter what you do or what you’ve done, nobody cares.
Nobody cares, it’s another learning lesson.”
Paul’s place in Clippers history is secure. The 41-year-old spent seven seasons with the franchise and helped turn a team that had once been largely irrelevant into a Western Conference force alongside Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan.
Across that run, he put up 18.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, 9.6 assists, 2.1 steals, and 0.1 blocks per game while shooting 47.3% from the field and 37.7% from three. He left Los Angeles on better terms in 2017, but that goodwill disappeared during his difficult 16-game run in 2025-26.
According to the source of the tension, Paul tried to push for defensive changes and offered advice that wasn’t always welcome. He also went at the coaches and held teammates accountable when he thought they were falling short. By the end, he and head coach Tyronn Lue were no longer speaking and had become outright enemies.
Rather than work through the conflict, the Clippers cut ties with Paul in an effort to preserve the locker room and save face. It didn’t lead to the success they wanted, and it left Paul feeling like the organization had little interest in honoring what he had done there.
