Odafe Oweh Joins Commanders in Major Four-Year Deal

Commanders beef up their defense with the high-stakes signing of Odafe Oweh, aiming for a turnaround after a challenging season.

The Washington Commanders have made a significant move this offseason by signing former Chargers EDGE Odafe Oweh. This four-year, $100 million deal, with $68 million guaranteed, marks a bold step for a team looking to revamp its defense. Oweh's contract is one of the largest in this free agency period, trailing only behind Jaelan Phillips and Alec Pierce in total value.

Oweh's rise in value can be traced back to his impressive performance with the Chargers last season. Originally a 2021 first-round pick by the Ravens, Oweh showed potential but lacked consistency. However, after being traded to Los Angeles, he recorded 7.5 sacks in 12 games and delivered a standout wild card performance against the Patriots with three sacks and two forced fumbles.

At 27, Oweh's athleticism and physical attributes-boasting a sub-4.40 40-yard dash and standing at 6-5, 251 pounds-make him a prime candidate for the Commanders' defensive overhaul. His signing aligns with Washington's strategy to infuse youth and speed into their roster, following a disappointing 5-12 season.

Washington's defense struggled last year, ranking last in yards per game allowed and near the bottom in other key defensive metrics. Oweh's ability to disrupt plays and generate pressure is exactly what the Commanders need, especially with their previous sack leader, Von Miller, entering free agency and nearing 37 years old.

Beyond Oweh, the Commanders have also secured deals with defensive tackle Tim Settle and cornerback Amik Robertson. These moves indicate a clear commitment to strengthening the defense, although linebacker remains a position they might still address.

With ample cap space and the No. 7 pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, Washington is well-positioned to continue enhancing their roster. The Commanders are clearly focused on building a younger, faster team, and Oweh's addition is a significant step in that direction.
