Another bizarre minor league mishap has involved a Dodgers outfielder, and this one came courtesy of a mascot on a scooter.
Alek Thomas, who is currently with Triple-A Oklahoma City, was jogging out of the dugout on Saturday before the club’s game against the Sacramento River Cats when the River Cats mascot, riding a scooter around the field, collided with him. Thomas was hit by the mascot and the scooter as he came out of the dugout.
The good news for the Dodgers was that Thomas was fine. He went 0-for-4 in Saturday’s game and did not play on Sunday.
It’s the second strange accident involving a Dodgers minor league outfielder this season. In May, Kendall George, one of the organization’s top prospects, hurt his knee while trying to avoid the team’s bat dog after scoring a run and heading into the dugout. The Double-A Tulsa Drillers outfielder missed more than a month because of the patellar tendon injury, though he returned earlier this month after healing faster than expected.
Thomas, 26, joined the Dodgers in mid-May in a trade with the division-rival Arizona Diamondbacks. Arizona had selected him in the second round of the 2018 draft, and he spent his entire career there before the deal.
He made his major league debut in 2022 and played 448 games over parts of five seasons with the Diamondbacks, batting .230 with 31 home runs, 143 RBIs and an OPS of .634. Known more for his defense, Thomas was the kind of player the Dodgers believed they could help offensively.
“A lot of the swing components have looked the same for a long, extended period of time, and we feel like there are some levers in there to partner with [Thomas] and potentially unlock a little bit more,” president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman told the Los Angeles Times in May. “But even as is, we feel like he’s a good extra outfielder, with the upside for even more than that.”
Through 35 games with Triple-A Oklahoma City, Thomas is hitting .263 with five home runs, 21 RBIs and an OPS of .766. He also has 23 strikeouts and 15 walks.
A call-up does not appear likely unless injuries hit the big league roster, and even then the Dodgers may choose to lean on some of their younger outfield prospects instead.
For now, Thomas will keep working in Oklahoma City, with the possibility that any offensive progress could also make him a trade piece if another club takes notice.
