Justin Herbert came within inches of a nasty practice collision Monday when a photographer sprinted into his path during a Chargers drill, turning an otherwise ordinary camp session into a scare that had plenty of people cringing.
The moment came as Herbert was working through a dropback drill. ESPN’s Kris Rhim captured the sequence on video, showing Herbert planting his feet just in time to avoid the oncoming photographer. It was close enough that a full-speed collision could have gone badly for both.
That kind of near-miss hits a little harder with Herbert than it might for some other quarterbacks. He’s dealt with real injury issues over the past year, including a broken hand in Week 13 last season that limited him down the stretch. With Week 1 right around the corner, any fresh setback would have been a major problem for the Chargers.
The clip quickly made the rounds, and fans had plenty to say once they saw how tight the call was. One wrote, “Now I get why he be shoving cameramen out the way when he’s running onto the field,” while another said, “This should never happen at the NFL level.
Everyone in the building understands the value of your starting QB. Come on man, tighten up,” A third fan added, “Welp that’s one way to lose your job,”
It also wasn’t the first time Herbert has had an awkward run-in with sideline media. He collided with a cameraman during a practice last September, drawing a similar reaction from fans then, too.
Outside of that scare, the Chargers have kept Herbert’s preseason pretty light. The team recently signed his younger brother Patrick off waivers, bringing the two back together for the first time since their Oregon days. Herbert has also been seen around the practice facility this summer spending time with fiancée Madison Beer.
For all the noise around Monday’s scare, the larger point is simple: that was far too close for comfort. With the season nearly here, the Chargers and everyone with a camera near the sideline will be hoping for a lot more space from here on out.
