The Los Angeles Chargers have stumbled into their Week 7 bye in brutal fashion, sitting at 0-6 and still looking for their first win of the season. That leaves them as one of just two winless teams in the NFL, alongside the Miami Dolphins.
The collapse has naturally put Jim Harbaugh under the microscope, especially with a start this ugly in a year that was supposed to look a lot better for Los Angeles. But one former Michigan voice isn’t backing away from him.
Biff Poggi, who had three separate stints coaching with the Michigan Wolverines and worked alongside Harbaugh for two of them, offered a strong defense of his former boss during an appearance on "The Jim Rome Show."
"The tougher things get, the better Jim is in those situations," Poggi said. "He's very optimistic.
He loves the QB; he loves the football team. I think that they will turn it around.
"He's an elite, elite football coach," Poggi continued.
Poggi also pointed to the Chargers’ injury issues, something that has followed the franchise in previous seasons as well. Even with that context, though, he believes Harbaugh is the kind of coach who can steer things back in the right direction.
The problem for the Chargers is that the schedule does not offer much relief coming out of the bye. They return to face the Los Angeles Rams, Houston Texans and Baltimore Ravens before taking on the New York Jets, and there is a realistic path to an 0-9 start.

Chargers May Be Sending A Brutal Message About Quentin Johnston
Quentin Johnstons uneven start to the 2026 season has put him in a familiar but uncomfortable spot with the Chargers, and now the front office appears willing to treat the situation as more than just a slump. His production has dipped from where it had been in previous years, and Los Angeles is weighing whether a fresh start elsewhere might make more sense as it tries to reshape the offense and regain some flexibility.
The timing only adds to the significance, with the trade deadline approaching and the Chargers trying to decide how aggressively to move on from a former first-round pick. Johnston still has value as a young receiver with upside, but the cap implications are part of the calculation too, and the possibility of a deal would speak loudly about where the organization believes this offense is headed next. Chargers Trade Deadline Could Force Joe Hortiz To Admit The Obvious
The Chargers enter the Week 7 bye in a familiar but uncomfortable place, still winless and staring at a November 10 trade deadline that could force the front office to confront what the season has already made plain. If the record keeps pushing the team toward a sellers stance, Joe Hortiz will have to weigh whether a roster built to compete now is better served by moving pieces that could still bring meaningful value back in return.
That conversation naturally puts veterans and younger standouts alike into view, with names such as Khalil Mack, Derwin James Jr. and Quentin Johnston circulating in the broader discussion about what comes next. However the Chargers choose to frame it, the question is no longer whether the deadline matters, but how much of the present they are willing to sacrifice in order to reshape the future. Chargers Face A Khalil Mack Decision That Could Define This Rebuild
The Chargers 0-6 start has them in a hole almost no NFL team has ever climbed out of, and it has pushed every roster decision into the spotlight. Khalil Mack is right in the middle of that conversation, not because of anything he has done wrong, but because a veteran edge rusher on a winless team naturally becomes one of the first names floated when the talk shifts from trying to salvage a season to mapping out a future.
Mack has remained publicly steady through the speculation, even as the possibility of a trade hangs over the teams rebuilding outlook. For a Chargers front office staring at the long odds of a turnaround, the question is no longer just about one players value on the field. It is about whether keeping a proven veteran around is worth more than turning him into future draft capital and accelerating what comes next. [Read more 🡒]
