The Chargers are heading into 2026 with a new offensive voice and a clear priority in front of them: keep Justin Herbert upright.
Jim Harbaugh’s decision to bring in former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel as the team’s new play-caller has already given the offense a different feel. Harbaugh’s classic, hard-nosed “football guy” style and McDaniel’s more analytical, easygoing approach are very different on paper, but the two have apparently clicked quickly on the practice field. The biggest immediate job, though, is on the interior of the offensive line. Harbaugh said Kayode Awosika is the current leader in the race for the starting left guard spot, calling him “probably the most consistent” option so far.
He also said rookie Jake Slaughter is “way ahead of schedule” and remains in the mix, along with Trey Pipkins, Trevor Penning, and Branson Taylor. Harbaugh made clear that the competition is still wide open, even while noting that Pipkins is one of the team’s top five offensive linemen.
Kris Rhim reported that Harbaugh wants the left guard job settled within the next ten practices as camp moves along.

That spot matters for more than just one position. Getting the interior line right is a big part of what the Chargers need if they want to get the most out of their pass-catchers and Herbert himself.
And Harbaugh has already shown plenty of confidence in that group. During mandatory minicamp, he made a strong statement about the weapons around his quarterback, saying, “We have three elite receivers.”
Ladd McConkey is looking to rebound after an injury-hit season, while Quentin Johnston is trying to build on his year after the Chargers picked up his fifth-year option. With the line still taking shape and the receiver room carrying real promise, the Chargers believe their revamped offense can give Herbert a stronger supporting cast in 2026.
