Giants Add Greg Roman to Staff After His Exit From Chargers

Veteran play-caller Greg Roman reunites with familiar faces as he takes on a key offensive role with the Giants.

Greg Roman is back in familiar territory - both in terms of coaching family and offensive philosophy - as he joins John Harbaugh’s inaugural staff with the New York Giants. After parting ways with the Chargers following their playoff exit at the hands of the Patriots, Roman isn’t straying far from the Harbaugh coaching tree that’s defined much of his career.

Roman will take on the role of senior offensive assistant in New York, working alongside offensive coordinator Matt Nagy. It’s a reunion of sorts with John Harbaugh, under whom Roman served as offensive coordinator in Baltimore from 2019 to 2022. Before that, he held other roles on the Ravens’ staff and also spent time with the 49ers and Stanford when Jim Harbaugh was at the helm.

This move brings a wealth of experience to the Giants’ offensive meeting rooms. Roman is known for building physical, run-heavy schemes that maximize quarterback mobility - most notably during his time with Lamar Jackson in Baltimore. That background could prove valuable as the Giants look to develop young quarterback Jaxson Dart, who brings athleticism and upside but is still raw at the NFL level.

While Nagy will be calling the plays, Roman’s presence offers a strong support system for shaping the offense’s identity. His track record suggests he’ll have input in the run game design and quarterback development, two areas where the Giants need to make real strides.

Bottom line: Roman isn’t just another veteran coach hopping to a new gig. He’s a proven offensive mind stepping into a situation where his skill set aligns with the team’s biggest needs. And with another Harbaugh on the headset, the Giants are clearly banking on continuity, familiarity, and a physical brand of football to spark a turnaround.
