The first NFL Sunday of the season wasted no time wrecking tickets.
The biggest shock came in Los Angeles, where the Chargers - 9.5-point home favorites - somehow fell to the Arizona Cardinals, a result that sent moneyline parlays and survivor pools into a tailspin. Yahoo’s most popular survivor pick, with more than 32 percent of entries, went down with the Bolts.
So did nearly one-third of the record 25,017 entries in Circa Survivor, where each ticket cost $1,000. I was in that carnage too.
That loss stung even more because another heavy home favorite made life look easy. The Jacksonville Jaguars, laying 8.5, handled the Cleveland Browns 34-10.
And if there was any doubt about Cleveland’s outlook, one quarter of watching Deshaun Watson’s ineptitude was enough to make the point. As Doug Kezirian put it on social media: "Looks like another season of oddsmakers struggling to make these Browns spreads high enough"
The most dramatic swing of the day, though, came in Detroit.
The New Orleans Saints were buried, trailing the Lions 21-0 midway through the third quarter. At DraftKings, their live moneyline had ballooned to +7800.
A $10 bet would have paid $780 if the comeback had been completed, but the Saints came up just short. Tyler Shough’s two-point pass attempt sailed over Noah Fant, and Detroit escaped with a 31-30 overtime win.
If the upsets didn’t torch bettors, the scoring did the rest.
Sunday’s slate turned into a parade of overs, with nine of 13 games clearing the number. That’s a notable twist for Week 1, especially with Monday Night Football still to play.
Entering Sunday, unders had been the dominant early-season trend over the last four seasons and the last two-plus seasons. This year, the opening week is on pace to be the highest-scoring Week 1 since the 1969-70 merger.
A big reason the action feels so constant now is the explosion of prop betting. Touchdowns, same-game parlays, first TDs, anytime TDs - every snap seems to carry a little more weight than it used to.
Jonathan Taylor gave public bettors an early jolt when he scored the first touchdown for the Indianapolis Colts against the Baltimore Ravens, cashing a -190 parlay leg for plenty of people who expected him to deliver after leading the league with 20 total touchdowns last season.
Then came the near-miss in Chicago. Carolina Panthers tight end Darren Waller caught a ball in the end zone against the Bears, looking like he had landed a +2500 ticket for the game’s first touchdown. A referee quickly wiped it out with an offensive pass interference call.

One of the cleaner sweat-free lessons from the day came in a tiny, very specific prop. I was watching friends ride Jahmyr Gibbs of the Detroit Lions to record at least 15 yards rushing in every quarter at +425 odds at Caesars Sportsbook.
Late in the first half, Detroit’s defense forced a New Orleans punt with under 30 seconds left. Two plays later, Gibbs took a shotgun handoff from the Lions’ own 9-yard line and ripped off 11 yards - enough to clear the 15-yard mark for the quarter and cash the ticket.
That’s the new NFL Sunday in a nutshell: every drive matters, every touchdown triggers a roar, and even a routine run can turn into a celebration.
