Chargers Target Former Head Coach In Offensive Coordinator Search

The Chargers are eyeing former Giants head coach Brian Daboll to fill their offensive coordinator vacancy, adding a high-profile name to an already competitive search.

The Chargers are casting a wide net in their search for a new offensive coordinator, and they've got their eyes on a big name: Brian Daboll. According to Tom Pelissero, the team has officially requested to interview the former Giants head coach for the vacancy.

Daboll is no stranger to the spotlight. He’s already interviewed for the Titans’ head coaching job and is reportedly on the radar for other OC opportunities, including in Philadelphia. That kind of attention speaks volumes about how respected he still is around the league-even after a tough run in New York.

Here’s where things stand in L.A. right now, as the Chargers work through their list of candidates:

  • Shane Day, current quarterbacks coach - Interviewed
  • Marcus Brady, pass game coordinator - Interviewed
  • Mike McDaniel, former Dolphins head coach - Interview scheduled
  • Brian Daboll, former Giants head coach - Interview requested

Daboll brings a deep and varied résumé to the table. He broke into the NFL back in 2000 with the Patriots as a defensive assistant and eventually worked his way up to wide receivers coach. From there, his journey took him to the Jets as a quarterbacks coach, and then through a string of offensive coordinator roles with the Browns, Dolphins, and Chiefs.

He returned to New England in 2013, this time as the tight ends coach, where he helped guide some of the most dynamic offenses of the Brady-Belichick era. In 2017, he took a brief detour into the college ranks, spending a season with Nick Saban at Alabama-a move that seemed to sharpen his offensive acumen even further.

But it was in Buffalo where Daboll really made his mark. From 2018 to 2021, he served as the Bills’ offensive coordinator, playing a pivotal role in the development of Josh Allen and helping transform the Bills into one of the AFC’s most explosive offenses. That success earned him his first head coaching opportunity with the Giants in 2022-and he made an immediate impact, leading New York to a playoff berth and earning NFL Coach of the Year honors in his debut season.

Since then, though, things haven’t gone quite as smoothly. Daboll’s head coaching record stands at 20-40-1, a win percentage of .336. Still, that one playoff win in his first year-and the offensive creativity he showed in both Buffalo and early on with the Giants-continues to make him a compelling candidate for teams looking to revamp their offenses.

For the Chargers, this is more than just filling a vacancy. With a franchise quarterback in place and a need to maximize their offensive potential, they’re looking for someone who can bring both experience and innovation to the table.

Daboll checks a lot of those boxes. Whether or not he ends up in L.A., the interest alone shows that the Chargers are aiming high-and they’re not the only ones.
