The Chargers’ Week 1 inactives list was worth watching long before kickoff against the Cardinals, and it all centered on one name: Tuli Tuipulotu.
Tuipulotu, who had looked healthy through much of the summer, suddenly popped up on the injury report before the opener. Head coach Jim Harbaugh said he wasn’t sure what the ailment was, even as the situation carried the feel of something bigger, with Tuipulotu and the Chargers potentially working on a big-money contract extension.
That uncertainty made the final injury designation matter. Tuipulotu landed as “questionable,” leaving his status at basically a 50-50 call heading into Sunday. For a Chargers defense trying to open the season on the right foot, that was not the ideal setup.
It would have been a particularly sharp hit to a pass-rushing group that doesn’t have a ton of proven depth behind him. Khalil Mack has been on a pitch count for years, even while remaining productive.

Tuipulotu’s presence matters for more than just the injury report. He had 13 sacks last season in 16 games and has 26 sacks across 50 total appearances. Even if he’s active, there’s still the possibility of his own workload being managed, which would leave Los Angeles leaning on a thin edge group as it begins a new era under coordinator Chris O’Leary.
