Los Angeles’ passing game took a hit in the third quarter of Sunday’s Week 1 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals when Ladd McConkey exited after a hard shot over the middle.
McConkey was visibly in pain after the collision and immediately went for his lower back. He then headed to the blue medical tent for evaluation before later being escorted off the sideline and into the locker room. ESPN Chargers reporter Kris Rhim relayed that update on X.
The Chargers eventually ruled McConkey questionable to return, citing an apparent left hip and lower-back injury. The team has not announced any further diagnosis.
Before leaving, McConkey had already put together a strong day as one of Justin Herbert’s top options. He finished with five catches for 82 yards and a touchdown on seven targets.
The second-year receiver was averaging 16.4 yards per reception at the time of his exit. His absence leaves Los Angeles without one of its key offensive weapons in a tight game.
The Chargers came into the opener aiming to start the season with a home win, and McConkey’s status could loom large down the stretch if he can’t make it back. Quentin Johnston and the rest of the receiving corps will need to absorb more of the workload if he remains sidelined.
For now, McConkey is still questionable to return, and the next update from the Chargers will determine whether he gets back on the field or stays in the locker room for the rest of the game.

Chargers Offense Raises An Early Concern Fans Wont Ignore
The first half in Week 1 did not exactly offer the kind of clean opening the Chargers were hoping for, as Los Angeles went into halftime trailing the Cardinals 13-7 and the offense looked out of sync in a few key spots. Justin Herbert had only 118 passing yards in the opening two quarters, and the ground game never really found a rhythm either, averaging 3.6 yards per carry while the Chargers tried to keep pace.
For a team with postseason ambitions, early offensive rust is the sort of thing that gets noticed quickly, especially when the scoreboard is already asking questions. The other bit of unease came on the defensive side, where lineman Jamaree Caldwell was shaken up in the first half before returning to the sideline after treatment, giving the Chargers at least some reason to hope the day would not get much worse. Chargers Suddenly Have A Pass Rush Problem Before Week 1
The Chargers are heading into Week 1 with an early concern on the edge, as star pass-rusher Tuli Tuipulotu landed on the injury report as questionable for the matchup with the Arizona Cardinals. Jim Harbaugh did not get into the nature of the issue, and that leaves Los Angeles at least a little unsettled on a part of the roster it was counting on to set the tone.
Depth behind Tuipulotu is not exactly overflowing, either. Khalil Mack and Bud Dupree give the Chargers veteran help, and rookie Akheem Mesidor is in the mix, but any uncertainty around Tuipulotu immediately changes the picture for a pass rush that was supposed to be a strength. How much of a role he can handle, if any, is now one of the more important questions hanging over the opener. [Read more 🡒]
Chargers Face A Tricky Cardinals Backfield Problem In Week 1
The early test for the Chargers defense in Week 1 may come with a wrinkle in the Arizona backfield, where Jeremiyah Love is expected to make his NFL debut despite working back from a high ankle sprain. The No. 3 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft gives the Cardinals a new layer of talent to account for, even with veteran Tyler Allgeier listed ahead of him and Arizona signaling a plan to spread the touches around.
For Los Angeles, the challenge is less about whether Love will be active and more about how much of the game he actually shapes. The Chargers are preparing as if he could have a significant role, which is the safest approach against a rookie with his profile, but the uncertainty around his workload leaves the opener with a few moving parts before the first snap is even taken.
