The Los Angeles Chargers have already made their move at tight end, but there’s still room to shop the free-agent market before training camp opens.
That’s not exactly a surprise for a Jim Harbaugh team. He’s made it clear he wants competition everywhere, and the Chargers have kept adding after the draft instead of treating roster building like a finished project.
The David Njoku signing was the headliner, and it landed as one of the stronger moves nationally. Even with breakout Oronde Gadsden at the top of the depth chart and Charlie Kolar now in the mix, the Chargers still found a way to bring in another impact name.
The same kind of thinking could apply to a few veterans still sitting out there.
One area that stands out is edge rusher. The Chargers used a first-round pick on Akheem Mesidor this year, with the idea that he can learn behind Khalil Mack and eventually grow into a long-term pressure piece next to Tuli Tuipulotu.
But the room behind them is thin. Kyle Kennard hasn’t shown much yet, and Bud Dupree keeps showing up on cut lists around the league.
That’s why a player like Jadeveon Clowney makes sense as a possible training-camp addition. He’s 33, and last season in Dallas he posted 22 quarterback pressures and 8.5 sacks in 13 games. He’s not the flashiest name on the board, but he would give the Chargers a real depth option.
Cornerback is another spot where the market still offers something useful. Stephon Diggs is still only 28, but he has not gotten back to his best form since the ACL injury he suffered in 2023, which is part of why he remains unsigned.
For the Chargers, the appeal is straightforward: more competition, more insurance. Cam Hart, Tarheeb Still and Donte Jackson make up a solid trio, and Derwin James can also be part of the nickel picture. Still, there are promising pieces there rather than locked-in answers, and Diggs would add veteran depth to that group.
There are other names in free agency who could help with injury protection during camp as well, including defensive lineman DaQuan Jones and linebacker Bobby Wagner.
Nothing on the market now is going to hit like the Njoku move did. But there are still useful options available, and the Chargers should have a pitch that matters this time of year: a contender with room for veterans who want a real shot.

Broncos Fans Will Care About What This Could Mean For Marvin Mims
The Chargers offensive line picture is still taking shape as training camp competition sorts itself out, with Kayode Awosika and Cole Strange both pushing for starting roles. Its the kind of battle that can ripple beyond the trenches, because whatever stability Los Angeles finds up front will shape how quickly the offense can function and how much pressure lands on Justin Herbert.
Herbert has already pointed to a quicker passing game as part of the answer, a shift that could help the line while also changing the rhythm of the offense. For a team trying to settle its protection while keeping the quarterback comfortable, the next few weeks will show whether the Chargers can turn that approach into something dependable rather than just promising. Chargers Fans Seem Finally United On One Long Ignored Need
Training camp is opening with the Chargers still sorting out their cornerback picture, and it is not hard to see why the position keeps drawing attention. There are established names in the mix, backup jobs are up for grabs, and recent injury issues in the defensive backfield have left the team in a spot where depth matters as much as the starters. Even with some young pieces in place, this is the kind of group that can look settled on paper and still feel one tweak away from becoming a problem.
Chargers fans seem to understand that better than most, which is why a recent poll landed so strongly on cornerback as the position they want addressed in the first round of the 2027 draft. The timing adds another layer, with Donte Jackson in the final year of his deal and Tarheen Still and Cam Hart entering year three of their rookie contracts. For a team that has spent too many recent seasons patching together the back end, the message from the fan base is pretty clear: this is a need that has been ignored long enough. [Read more 🡒]
Chargers Long Term Plan Up Front May Already Be Taking Shape
The Chargers long-term thinking up front is already drawing attention, even if the calendar is still a long way from draft season. An early 2027 mock draft has them looking at the defensive line, a reminder that the front office is always weighing how to keep the interior sturdy against the run while building depth for the future.
It is the kind of projection that says as much about organizational priorities as it does about any one prospect. Los Angeles already addressed the middle of its defensive front by bringing in Dalvin Tomlinson, and any future draft plan will depend on how the roster develops from here, but the idea of adding another versatile run defender down the road fits the direction the Chargers appear to be heading.
