The Chargers have one roster spot sitting in limbo, and it comes with a built-in catch.
Los Angeles moved on Sunday to trim down to its 53-man roster, and while TeRah Edwards is now headed to the Carolina Panthers to help on the defensive line, the Bolts still haven’t fully wrapped up their own roster business under coach Jim Harbaugh. The missing piece is at punter, where the team currently has nobody in place.
NFL insider Tom Pelissero explained why on X, formerly Twitter: “The Chargers released punter J.K. Scott, but it's temporary: He is expected to return to the roster this week, per source,” Pelissero posted on the social media website X, formerly Twitter.
That leaves Harbaugh, Justin Herbert and the rest of the Chargers without a punter for the moment, even though the expectation is that Scott will be back soon. The move also fits with how Scott’s summer had been trending after one rough preseason moment put him in the spotlight.
Against the San Francisco 49ers on Aug. 20, Scott allowed a punt return touchdown when Jacob Cowing took it 83 yards to the end zone.
“The punt fell short and in the middle, and then we got out-flanked,” Harbaugh said to reporters following that Aug. 20 lopsided loss to SF 41-17.
Scott also made things worse with his attempt to make a tackle on the play.
“He’s got to have a plan when he’s in that position to make the tackle. Something we need to work on, coach up,” Harbaugh said.
Even so, the Chargers are planning to keep the door open for Scott and bring him back after he clears waivers. For now, that leaves one spot unresolved as Los Angeles works through the final steps of its roster.
