Justin Herbert’s Fire, Grit, and Quiet Swagger Are Fueling the Chargers’ Future
The Los Angeles Chargers have been a playoff team in back-to-back seasons under Jim Harbaugh - a sign of clear progress. But let’s be honest: postseason success has eluded them.
A blowout loss to the Texans after the 2024 campaign, followed by a sputtering offensive showing against the AFC champion Patriots this year, left fans wanting more. And no one feels that sting more than Justin Herbert.
Still, don’t let the playoff exits overshadow what Herbert continues to bring to the table. The Chargers' quarterback remains one of the most dynamic signal-callers in the league - a steady presence with a rocket arm, underrated wheels, and, as it turns out, a bit of an edge.
Yes, that Justin Herbert.
While the former Oregon standout is known for his calm, workmanlike approach during the week - first one in, last one out, head buried in the playbook - he flips a switch on Sundays. According to cornerback Cam Hart, Herbert isn’t just leading the offense; he’s also dishing out some unexpected trash talk.
“He will surprise you,” Hart said. “Justin is basically a quiet guy who comes in and does his work during the week.
But on Game Day, he can make a huge play and he will let people hear about it. Nobody is expecting that from him, so it really has an impact.”
That kind of fire matters. It’s not just about barking at defenders - it’s about presence.
Swagger. And when it’s coming from a guy who’s usually all business, it hits differently.
It tells the locker room, *we’re not just here to compete - we’re here to take over. *
And Herbert’s numbers back it up. Despite the team’s postseason struggles, he put together another strong campaign.
He completed 340 of 412 passes for 3,727 yards, tossing 26 touchdowns against 13 interceptions. Add in 498 rushing yards - including five runs of 20-plus yards - and two rushing scores, and you’ve got a quarterback who can beat you in more ways than one.

Herbert’s connection with rookie wideout Ladd McConkey was one of the bright spots of the season. McConkey led the team with 66 receptions for 789 yards and six touchdowns, showing a knack for finding space and making himself available in key moments. That chemistry looks like something the Chargers can build on - especially if they can find more consistency in the run game next season.
Because here’s the thing: Herbert’s already doing a lot. The numbers, the leadership, the surprise trash talk - it’s all there. But if the Chargers can give him a more balanced offense, with a ground game that forces defenses to respect play-action and opens up the middle of the field, this passing attack could take the next leap.
The playoff losses sting, no doubt. But with Herbert at the helm - a quarterback who leads with his play, prepares like a vet, and isn’t afraid to let opponents know when he’s cooking - the Chargers aren’t far off.
The foundation is there. Now it’s about building the rest around it.
