The Los Angeles Chargers are being linked to a possible receiver upgrade, and the name to watch is New England Patriots wideout Kayshon Boutte.
With trade chatter building around Boutte, Los Angeles has emerged as one of the more logical landing spots if the Patriots decide to move the 24-year-old before the 2026 NFL season. The Chargers have a clear need for more help at wide receiver, and Boutte would give Justin Herbert another young target without requiring a major financial commitment.
The buzz has grown enough that the Chargers are now being viewed as a team that could make sense in a deal. The Global Sports Desk laid out the case this way:
"Kayshon Boutte has begun drawing trade interest as the New England Patriots continue to reshape their roster before the 2026 season. While one recent proposal linked him to the New York Giants in a deal involving edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux, that scenario looks unlikely. The Giants already have plenty of wide receivers, making it difficult to see where Boutte would fit.
Instead, the Los Angeles Chargers and Los Angeles Rams have emerged as stronger landing spots if New England decides to move the 24-year-old. The Indianapolis Colts have also been mentioned as another team that could make sense.
The Chargers are one team that stands out. Justin Herbert is still looking for another dependable target behind Ladd McConkey and Quentin Johnston.
Los Angeles tried to improve the position earlier in the offseason but did not land DK Metcalf. Boutte could give the offense another young receiver without forcing the Chargers to make a major financial commitment."
That possibility also comes with Keenan Allen in mind. Allen is a free agent after spending a season back with the Chargers, and Boutte would represent a younger option if Los Angeles is looking to replace that veteran production.
Allen has given the Chargers plenty over the years, but Boutte would bring a different timeline. The Patriots receiver could help right away while also giving the Chargers a chance to see whether he can grow into a longer-term fit.
Tre Harris is still part of the picture, and the Chargers remain optimistic about his upside. Even so, Harris still has a lot to prove, and another receiver in the mix could let him develop without being rushed.
Los Angeles could also stand pat at the position, but with cap space still available, doing nothing may not be the cleanest answer. For now, Boutte is a name to keep on the radar as the Chargers weigh their options for 2026.

Chargers May Have An Undrafted Rookie Pushing For A Crucial Role
Jacob Spomers path to the Chargers is the kind of long, winding offensive line story that usually starts with patience and ends with a camp invite. The former Liberty High School and Diablo Valley College standout made his way to Fresno State, where he kept climbing after a move to center and eventually earned First-Team All-Mountain West honors in 2025.
For Los Angeles, the appeal is obvious: Spomer arrives as an undrafted rookie with a chance to carve out a real role up front. His college rise came after a torn ACL slowed his progress, but the Chargers are giving him a shot to compete for a spot that could matter more than it looks on paper once camp battles start sorting themselves out. Chargers Defense Could Look Very Different Under Chris O'Leary
Chris OLeary is back in the Chargers defensive chair for 2026, and with Jesse Minter off to Baltimore, the structure of this unit could change in a meaningful way. OLearys return comes after a season at Western Michigan, where he showed a willingness to heat up opposing quarterbacks more aggressively than the Chargers did under Minter, giving this defense a different personality than the one that helped define the last couple of years.
The biggest question now is how much of that approach carries over to Los Angeles, especially with a linebacker group that looks deep enough to force real competition when camp opens. OLearys track record suggests more pressure could come from the second level and from the slot, which would put players like Derwin James Jr. in the middle of the conversation as the Chargers sort out how they want to attack in 2026. Chargers Defense Faces A Real Test Under Chris OLeary
Chris OLeary steps into a good situation on paper, taking over a Chargers defense that already has a sturdy core and a familiar structure around it. With Derwin James, Khalil Mack, Tuli Tuipulotu and Daiyan Henley in place, along with help from Tarheeb Still, Cam Hart, Akheem Mesidor and Teair Tartt, there is enough talent to keep the unit competitive while OLeary settles in.
The bigger question is how smoothly he can turn that foundation into week-to-week production once the games start forcing quick decisions. The Chargers are not asking him to rebuild from scratch, but they are asking him to keep the defense sharp in the moments that matter most, and that is where his first real test begins.
