A quarterback swap between the Cowboys and Chargers would send shockwaves through the NFL, and Boomer Esiason thinks it at least belongs in the conversation.
On “Kickoff with Boomer and Valenti,” Esiason floated the idea of Justin Herbert going to Dallas and Dak Prescott landing in Los Angeles, and he said the move would be good for the league, though he doubts Jerry Jones would actually make it happen.
The suggestion lands at a strange moment for both teams. Dallas came into the season with real expectations and has not turned that talent into steady results. Jones has already said the Cowboys are open to trade talks before the Nov. 10 deadline, even if he had previously made it sound like defensive help would be the more likely move.
Los Angeles, meanwhile, is in a far more desperate place. The Chargers entered Week 7 at 0-6, and the Herbert era looks increasingly bleak even with Herbert’s obvious talent.
That’s what gives the idea its appeal. Prescott would bring a proven veteran presence to the Chargers, while Herbert would instantly become the centerpiece of the Cowboys’ offense. Both quarterbacks have shown they can produce when the pieces around them are right.
But the bigger question is whether either team really has a quarterback problem in the first place.
Herbert’s talent has never been the issue, and Prescott was also projected to put up big numbers for Dallas entering the season. The more likely reality is that the Chargers’ record and the Cowboys’ struggles point to deeper issues with the roster and coaching.
A trade like this would not magically repair Los Angeles, and it would not automatically clean up Dallas’ mess either.
Still, Esiason’s idea has bite because both teams could use a jolt. Dallas is still sitting in a wide-open NFC East, while the Chargers are hunting for answers after a disastrous start.
For the Cowboys, a Prescott-for-Herbert deal feels extremely unlikely. But the fact that it’s even being talked about says plenty about how fast the mood has shifted in both places.
If it happened, it would dominate the NFL for weeks. Whether it would actually make either team better is another matter entirely.

Cowboys Linked To Young Pass Rusher Who Could Change Their Ceiling
The trade deadline chatter around the Chargers has included one of their more intriguing young defenders, as edge rusher Tuli Tuipulotu has surfaced in reports tied to Dallas. The Athletic identified him as a possible target for the Cowboys as they look for help on defense, and it is easy to see why a player with his production and age would draw interest if Los Angeles is willing to listen.
Tuipulotus situation adds another layer here, since he is operating on the final year of his rookie contract after the Chargers and his camp did not come to terms on an extension over the offseason. The Chargers have stumbled this season, which only fuels the possibility that they could entertain offers, but for now there is no deal in place and no indication of how far these conversations might go. Brian Thomas Jr. Just Entered A Jaguars Debate Fans Hate
The NFL trade buzz is already starting to build around the Nov. 10 deadline, and one of the names floating out there is a familiar one for Chargers fans. Adam Schefter recently highlighted several players who could be in play before then, with the Colts expected to be active sellers and a mix of contenders beginning to look ahead at what could become a crowded market.
For Los Angeles, any deadline chatter that touches Khalil Mack is bound to get attention, even this early. The veteran pass rusher remains the kind of player teams monitor when they think they can upgrade a playoff push, and the broader list of possible trade candidates suggests this could turn into one of those stretches where contenders keep checking the market until the last minute. Chargers Suddenly Face A Khalil Mack Decision That Could Reshape Things
Khalil Mack is suddenly back in the middle of trade chatter as the Chargers stare at another disappointing stretch and try to decide what the rest of this season is really about. NFL insiders Ian Rapoport and Adam Schefter have both pointed to the possibility that Mack could become available, and the veteran pass rusher would immediately draw attention around the league because of what he still brings as one of the most accomplished edge players of his era.
The twist is that Los Angeles has not signaled any urgency to move him yet, even as outside interest starts to sharpen. Mack, who has 116 career sacks and once played for Chicago, would make obvious sense for a defense looking for help, and the longer the Chargers linger in their current spot, the more this becomes one of the bigger roster decisions hanging over the franchise.
