Chargers Injuries Could Force Oronde Gadsden Into A Bigger Role

With key wide receivers sidelined, Oronde Gadsden is poised to become a pivotal target for the Chargers in their clash against the Broncos.

The Chargers’ latest injury report has turned Oronde Gadsden into one of the most interesting names on the board for Sunday’s game against the Broncos.

With Quentin Johnston and Brenen Thompson already ruled out and Ladd McConkey questionable because of a foot injury, Justin Herbert may have to lean harder on his tight ends than usual. For a Los Angeles offense that needs help in the worst way, that could mean a much bigger workload for Gadsden.

The rookie tight end is coming off his most active game of the season against the Seattle Seahawks, when he caught five of eight targets for 36 yards. He also had a two-yard carry as the Chargers tried to keep finding ways to get him involved.

The production wasn’t eye-popping, but the usage mattered. Through four games, Gadsden has nine catches for 86 yards and one touchdown, and the Chargers clearly want more from him.

The matchup with Denver might force the issue.

Gadsden gives Herbert a different kind of target. At 6-foot-5, he can work the middle of the field and create problems for linebackers and defensive backs. That size gives him a built-in edge that the Chargers’ smaller, quicker receivers don’t offer, and with the offense still looking for rhythm, getting him the ball more often could be one of the cleaner ways to generate some movement.

Los Angeles still has other pass-catching options available. Tre’ Harris and Derius Davis are expected to pick up the slack at receiver with Johnston and Thompson out. But McConkey’s status makes the whole picture messier, and the more uncertainty there is at wideout, the more valuable a dependable tight end becomes.

There’s also a potential opportunity in the tight end room itself. David Njoku remains on injured reserve with a fibula injury, and Charlie Kolar is questionable with a forearm injury. If Kolar can’t go, Gadsden could see an even larger slice of the snaps and targets that are available.

That matters for a Chargers team that has started the season 0-4 and is still hunting for answers on offense. The injuries haven’t made life easier, but the unit still has to find a way to move the ball and score points.

Sunday gives Gadsden a chance to build on what he showed last week. Herbert has already shown a willingness to look his way, and the current injury situation could create more chances than Gadsden would normally see. If he makes the most of them, he could end up being one of the key pieces in the Chargers’ passing game against Denver.

Chargers Fans Still Have One Reason To Believe After An 0-4 Start

An 0-4 start can feel like the season is already slipping away, but history offers at least one reminder that the door is not fully closed. Around the NFL, teams that dig that deep a hole usually stay there, yet one Chargers group found a way to claw back into relevance and turn a miserable opening month into something far more meaningful.

That team came together under a first-year head coach and got a major jolt when the quarterback situation shifted before the regular season even began. The early stumble gave way to a steady run of wins, a playoff berth and even a postseason victory, which is exactly the kind of route this current Chargers team would love to study while trying to stop the early-season damage from becoming permanent. Chargers Injury Pileup Is Raising Bigger Questions About Jim Harbaugh

The injury list around the Chargers has become a weekly burden, with roughly 20 players showing up on reports and nine already on injured reserve heading into Week 5. For a team that opened 0-4, the sheer volume of absences has made it hard to separate bad health luck from a bigger organizational problem, especially as the Broncos come to town and the roster keeps thinning out in key spots.

Jim Harbaugh was brought in to steady things, but the early-season spiral has only intensified the scrutiny around how the staff is navigating it. The latest wave of roster attrition has only added to the pressure, and with Los Angeles still searching for its first win, the conversation is starting to move beyond this weeks matchup and toward what all of it could mean for the coaching staff if the slide continues. Chargers Suddenly Face A Khalil Mack Decision Before The Deadline

Khalil Macks early-season production has put an unexpected wrinkle into the Chargers build-up to the trade deadline. The veteran edge rusher, now 35, has three sacks in four games and remains one of the more recognizable names on a team trying to sort out its place in the AFC picture, which is why his situation has started to draw attention beyond Los Angeles.

Several league sources and analysts have suggested that a move involving Mack could make sense for both sides, especially given his past mixed feelings about leaving Chicago. The Chargers, though, have not shown any indication they want to move him, and with the deadline set for Nov. 10, the question is whether this becomes a real decision point or just another piece of outside chatter around a player who still matters to what Los Angeles is trying to do.
