The Chargers are staring at a rough stretch that could get even uglier if the health report doesn’t improve fast. An 0-6 mark at the bye week is now very much in play before a road trip to face the Kansas City Chiefs, and the early signs around the roster don’t suggest a clean fix is coming.
The most troubling part for Los Angeles is who keeps popping up on the injury sheet. In a Jim Harbaugh era that was supposed to lean on cornerstone pieces, wide receiver Ladd McConkey and tackle Joe Alt are suddenly major question marks instead of stabilizers.
McConkey’s situation sounded especially discouraging. He was active for last weekend’s loss to Denver, but that turned out to be only for an “emergency” situation because he ended up not playing at all. Harbaugh then made it clear this week that it is only “possible” McConkey gets back to practice ahead of Week 6, according to The Athletic’s Noah Furtado.
Alt’s status is no clearer. ESPN’s Anthony Gharib reported that the offensive tackle is still being tested for the neck injury that could determine how long he’s out.
That’s a problem for a line that has already been stretched to the limit. The Chargers had to lean on four rookies up front against Justin Herbert last week, and the results were disastrous. With players such as Kayode Awosika still rehabbing injuries, there isn’t much evidence that setup changes in any meaningful way against Kansas City.
The problems don’t stop on the edge, either. Herbert’s receiving group could be missing more firepower with Tre Harris now listed as “week-to-week” after suffering a hamstring injury. Quentin Johnston is also expected to be limited because of his chest issue.
Taken together, the injuries paint a bleak picture for the Chiefs game before the bye. After that, the Chargers may finally get some relief if the extra rest helps them return healthier and a little more competitive.
There is at least one small upside to the chaos. The injuries are forcing younger players into real action, which gives them live reps and gives the organization film to study when offseason decisions come around. Whether that ultimately helps Harbaugh and his staff make those calls is another matter entirely.

Chargers Could Catch A Break In A Huge Mahomes Week 6 Question
The Chargers spent their bye week looking for any edge they can find before a big division test, and the latest Chiefs injury report may have given them one. Wide receiver Rashee Rice was held out of practice Wednesday after the hamstring injury he picked up in Week 4, leaving his status up in the air for the Week 6 meeting in Los Angeles. Kansas City also got offensive tackle Josh Simmons back on the field after a back injury, though the team said it plans to ease him in as he works back toward full action.
For the Chargers, Rice is the kind of player whose availability can change the feel of the whole game plan, especially in a matchup that already carries plenty of weight in the AFC West. The Chiefs will keep evaluating their injured players through the rest of the week, so there is still time for the picture to shift before Sunday, but for now Los Angeles has reason to keep an eye on one of Patrick Mahomes' top pass-catching options. Chargers Head Into Chiefs Week With A Roster Problem Getting Hard To Ignore
The week before a bye is supposed to be the part of the schedule where a team at least gets to catch its breath. Instead, the Chargers are heading into their Week 6 matchup with the Chiefs carrying a battered roster and a growing list of important names working through injury issues. Los Angeles recently activated Branson Taylor off injured reserve, but that small bit of help comes against a much larger backdrop of absences and limitations across the lineup.
The problems reach into every layer of the team, from the offensive line to the receiver group and into the defense, where several players have been limited or unable to practice. That leaves the Chargers trying to piece together enough depth and continuity for one of their biggest games of the early season, with the bye week looming as the first real chance to stabilize a roster that has been hard to keep whole. Chargers May Be Near A Deadline Decision Fans Dread
With the Chargers stumbling to an 0-5 start, the front office is already being pushed toward uncomfortable conversations about a season that has gone sideways early. One of the names that could surface before the 2026 NFL trade deadline is veteran defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson, whose experience and interior presence would make sense for a contender looking for help on the defensive front.
Tomlinsons situation is especially worth watching because his market will depend on how healthy he is and whether interested teams see enough value to make a move. He is not the only defender who could draw attention if Los Angeles keeps sliding, but the bigger picture around the roster is clear enough: the Chargers may have to decide whether to hold their ground, sell off pieces, or keep searching for a way to stabilize a season that already feels like it is drifting.
