The Chargers are headed into the final stretch before their 2026 opener against the Arizona Cardinals, and one of the biggest unresolved items on the board is Tuli Tuipulotu’s future.
Los Angeles still has a few offseason questions hanging over it as Monday morning arrives: the starting left guard job is not settled, cornerback No. 4 is still unclear, and Tuipulotu remains without a contract extension. The edge rusher is set to play 2026 on the final year of his rookie deal if nothing changes soon.
That talks have dragged on is not exactly shocking once you look at the edge market. Tuipulotu’s agents, David Canter and Ness Mugrabi of Aura Sports Group, have been negotiating with the Chargers front office, but no agreement has come together. The latest deals at the position have likely made the process more complicated, especially the extensions for Nick Herbig in Pittsburgh and George Karlaftis in Kansas City.
Herbig’s new contract has become the real wrinkle here. The Steelers handed him a four-year, $100 million extension in late July, even though he’s generally viewed as the third edge rusher in their rotation. He also finished 2025 with 23 fewer pressures and five fewer sacks than Tuipulotu.
Tuipulotu’s production is not in question. The debate is how much of that output comes from his own ability and how much is tied to the scheme, the defense around him and his knack for cleaning things up. Pro Football Focus had Herbig 12th in the NFL in pass rush win rate at 16.9 percent, while Tuipulotu was tied for 53rd at 12 percent.
Age is another piece of this puzzle, and it matters. Tuipulotu just turned 24 on September 3 and is still the youngest edge rusher in the Chargers’ room even though he’s entering his fourth NFL season. His motor has driven a lot of what he’s done so far, but he’s still building out his pass-rush arsenal, and more growth is a fair expectation.
Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz addressed the situation on the Chargers Weekly podcast and made it clear the team wants to keep talking. He said the organization loves Tuipulotu and added, "When we get to a spot where you feel good about it, we will get it done."
Hortiz also said, "I just told him we’ll keep working on this, and you keep doing you. When we get to a spot where you feel good about it, we’ll get it done."
That reads like a direct message to Tuipulotu as the sides try to find common ground. The pass rusher has stayed out of the public back-and-forth, and with the season one week away, any deal that gets done would have to come together quickly.
