Justin Herbert’s rough Sunday in Las Vegas brought the usual quarterback scrutiny, but this one spilled well beyond the box score. After the Chargers fell 26-14 to the Raiders and slipped to a horrible 0-2 start to 2026, the backlash around Herbert picked up fast - and Madison Beer, his fiancée, got pulled into it too.
Herbert finished 15 of 27 for 192 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions, and that was enough for Michael Irvin to take a shot at him in an Instagram reel shared by Irvin’s team.
“You made the wrong drive," he said. "Driving your girl to the airport, but you can't drive this team to that end zone?!
That's a problem. You made the wrong drive."
The caption doubled down on the joke: “Mike thinks Justin Herbert is focused on the wrong drive.”
The comments came after photos circulated online showing Herbert giving Beer a ride to the airport before Sunday’s game. The two have been a visible offseason couple, with Herbert spending a good portion of the offseason traveling abroad with the singer.
Herbert joined Beer on her “Locket” tour, and he later said the experience changed the way he viewed what she does. On an appearance on the “Chargers Weekly” podcast, he explained:
“I saw how much fun she had with her dancers, and it was so fun to watch because I recognized that from football -- when I step out onto the field, you’re playing well and having fun with your guys. She did so well, and being able to watch her have that experience gave me a newfound respect for performing because I didn’t really know much about it before.
“It’s gotta be so tough, and you know, the respect that I have for her and what she does. I would wait with her backstage and then go to the front of the house and have the best view, take pictures and videos. I had so much fun & a very good time.”
Not everyone piled on Herbert, though. On Monday’s “The Pat McAfee Show,” ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky pushed back on the idea that Sunday’s loss was on the quarterback alone.
“Yesterday is not a Herbert thing. ... There is six or seven legit, just jaw-dropping drops on that tape. ...
Their interior offensive line is absolutely atrocious right now. … They look remarkably unprepared, the Chargers.
They look so outcoached on both sides of the football.”
