Los Angeles opens camp on July 29, and the buzz around Jim Harbaugh’s team is less about potential than expectation. Harbaugh has made big changes, firing the only offensive coordinator he had in his two NFL stints (Greg Roman) and hiring quirky, innovative former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel in his place. There's also first-year defensive coordinator Chris O'Leary, who replaces Jesse Minter, the now-Ravens head coach who turned this defense from the basement of the NFL to a top-five unit.
The aspirations for this team are a championship. But at minimum, they're going for quarterback Justin Herbert's first playoff win, a process begins in earnest next week."
That urgency is shaping the tone of camp. The Chargers seem intent on putting the pressure on themselves and treating this season like the moment to deliver, rather than waiting for the outside noise to do it for them.
With the pieces now around Herbert, this feels like a team built to win. If the Chargers make the playoffs and still leave without a victory, that will be seen as a letdown at the very least, and maybe more depending on the matchup. The expectations are clear now, and how Los Angeles handles them will be one of the biggest stories of the season.
