The Baltimore Ravens are getting more than a new head coach in Jesse Minter, at least if you ask Chargers linebacker Marlowe Wax. They’re getting, in his words, a “guru” and a “genius.”
Wax, speaking on The Press Box Online with Glenn Clark, had plenty to say about the former Chargers defensive coordinator, who left Los Angeles to take over as Baltimore’s new head coach. Minter hasn’t coached a game in Baltimore yet, but Wax thinks Ravens fans are about to find out why he was such a coveted name and why he was chosen as the successor to John Harbaugh.
"I think he's gonna be everything that the city is looking for," Wax said. "I mean, he's a guru, he's a genius."
That kind of praise carries weight coming from a player who spent only one season under Minter as a rookie. Wax said Minter’s value goes well beyond the scheme. He sees a coach who can build a defense that flies around while also making himself accessible to everyone in the building.
"He's gonna make sure the defense is flying around, but also he's gonna be that coach that the offensive players can come to and talk to and just have fun with and have a conversation with," Wax said.
Wax also pointed to Minter’s ability to create trust inside the locker room, saying players will buy in because they’ll feel supported.
"They're gonna feel comfortable when they're stepping on the field," Wax added. "They're gonna feel as though their coach really has their back in any situation. They're gonna really try to play for him because it's gonna be a family-oriented organization now."
For Wax, though, the biggest separator is still Minter’s football mind. He said Minter will be the one in charge of the play-calling and the one making sure the details are exactly where they need to be.
"He's gonna have those guys fired up coming every Sunday. He's a genius.
He's gonna be the one calling the plays. He's gonna be the one controlling everything and then make sure that the X's and O's are just exactly what they need to be."
Wax also believes Minter’s approach will help everyone on the roster see the game the same way, from the top of the depth chart to the bottom.
"I think just like the leaders on the team, they're gonna be meeting with mentor and everything to get the guys from the top of the depth charts to bottom depth charts, so everybody sees the game the exact same way," Wax said.
Those are the kinds of comments that should only boost the buzz around Minter in Baltimore. The Ravens are handing him the job with a reputation for innovation, communication and leadership already attached to his name.
And for the Chargers, Wax’s words are a sharp reminder of what they just lost. Under Minter, Los Angeles became one of the league’s most disciplined and fundamentally sound defenses, with a staffer who could maximize talent, disguise coverages and put players in position to succeed. He also earned real respect in the locker room.
Finding another elite play-caller is hard enough. Finding one players describe as a “genius” and someone they’d run through a wall for is a different kind of challenge altogether.

Another Former Chargers Safety Is Emerging In Jesse Minter's Orbit
The Chargers defensive coaching tree has a familiar feel again after Jesse Minter left for Baltimore and Chris OLeary stepped in as the new defensive coordinator. The thread running through it is Vanderbilt, where the staff connections have kept former Chargers safeties in the conversation and helped create another possible pipeline back to Los Angeles.
Vanderbilts defense has taken a real step forward under that group, climbing from 126th to 50th in scoring defense while finishing 18th against the run. Within the building, the work has drawn strong praise, and the way those coaches have meshed together is exactly the kind of thing the Chargers will keep watching as they shape the next version of Minters defense. Bengals May Have A Cheap Answer To A Familiar Backfield Fear
The Chargers backfield has a little more traffic in it now, and that has turned one of last seasons more useful depth pieces into a possible trade chip. After putting together a solid year as a runner and receiver, Kimani Vidal has become the kind of player another team could view as an affordable way to stabilize its rotation without paying a premium.
For Cincinnati, the appeal is obvious: a back who can handle volume, contribute in the passing game and fit behind an established starter if the room needs insurance. Los Angeles, meanwhile, has added more bodies to the position and may not be able to keep everyone in the mix, which is why this idea has started to surface as a practical fit for both sides, even if the final decision still hangs in the balance. Justin Herbert Gets Dragged Into Another Viral Madison Beer Storm
Justin Herbert keeps finding his name attached to Madison Beer headlines, and this latest round had nothing to do with football. A viral clip making the rounds online was falsely linked to Beer, even though the person in the video was content creator Sophia Frutos, while Beer has been busy with her music and an international tour. For Chargers fans, it is another reminder that Herberts off-field life has a way of spilling into the spotlight whenever Beers profile spikes.
The quarterback has already shown he is willing to make room for that part of his life, missing part of the Chargers offseason program to support Beer on her European tour. Jim Harbaugh was publicly fine with it, which only added to the sense that this is not becoming a distraction inside the building. Herbert even showed up for the opening-night performance of 15 MINUTES, where he was there for the choreographed dance routine, so the only real suspense now is how often his name will keep getting pulled into the next viral wave.
