The Chargers’ second practice of Week 3 brought the pads, and with them came a clearer look at who’s pushing, who’s sitting, and who’s making noise with the first preseason game against the Houston Texans just two days away.
Tuesday’s session leaned heavily toward the defense. The unit controlled plenty of the action, and several players fighting for jobs made their case in a big way. For a roster still taking shape, it was exactly the kind of practice that can tilt a few battles.
One of the biggest updates came before the work even started. Head coach Jim Harbaugh said during his pre-practice press conference that, beyond Rashawn Slater, two more starters were out of practice “working through something minor.” Wide receiver Quentin Johnston and cornerback Tarheeb Still are both out right now.
Slater has now missed four practices in a row, and while Harbaugh avoided getting into specifics, Slater offered a clearer picture when he spoke with reporters. He said he felt something around his surgically repaired knee at the first practice at the University of San Diego last Tuesday, and the training staff is taking the cautious route so it doesn’t turn into anything bigger.
"We haven't seen anything that's really concerning. Obviously, it's not always the smoothest process coming back from a big injury," Slater said.
"Nothing to be concerned about. Just being smart, being thoughtful with the way we progress.
The Chargers also released their first unofficial depth chart after Sunday’s practice, and while that chart is put together by the media and PR staff rather than the coaching staff, it still gave a few hints about how things may be lining up. One of the more notable names was Tarheeb Still, who was listed as the starter opposite veteran Donte Jackson or Cam Hart.
With Still sidelined, Jackson and Hart both had strong showings. Jackson picked off two passes, while Hart matched up with Ladd McConkey in press-man coverage and brought the physical edge.
There were also plenty of flashes from the edge-rusher group. Undrafted free agent Nadame Tucker, who was the only UDFA not listed last at his position on the unofficial depth chart, was disruptive in one-on-ones.
At one point, he went straight through the chest of veteran offensive tackle Trey Pipkins. Tucker looks to be battling Kyle Kennard for a role, and possibly a roster spot, and Kennard had his own productive day with a more developed pass-rush package.
For both players, the preseason games are going to matter.
Inside, Teair Tart, Jamaree Caldwell and Justin Eboigbe kept showing up as problems for the offense. Caldwell and Eboigbe in particular appear ready for bigger workloads and seem to be leaning into those opportunities.
The offense had its moments too. Wide receiver Keandre Lambert-Smith has put together a run of strong practices, and on Tuesday he won a route in one-on-ones. Tre Harris delivered one of the day’s best catches, adjusting beautifully on a back-shoulder throw with Donte Jackson tight in coverage, a grab that drew clear attention.
Another notable development came with Tuli Tuipulotu, who appears to have wrapped up his hold-in and returned to full team activities. He spoke with the media for the first time since camp began after practice, and both he and Harbaugh sidestepped the details of what had been happening behind the scenes with the contract talks.
Tuipulotu was direct when asked about that final year of his rookie deal: "I'll let my agents and the guys upstairs handle that," Tuipulotu said. "Let the business handle business.
I'm a football player. That's all I do.
That's all I know."

Branson Taylor Is Giving Harbaughs Chargers Culture A Real Test
Three weeks into fall camp, the Chargers are getting a better read on one of their most intriguing internal battles, and Branson Taylor has made sure the competition at left guard has plenty of attention. The 2025 sixth-round pick spent his rookie year on the practice squad, but his offseason work has clearly changed the conversation, putting him squarely in the mix for a starting spot on an offensive line that still needs to settle in.
Jim Harbaugh, Mike McDaniel and Justin Herbert have all spoken highly of Taylors progress, which says plenty about how far he has come in a short time. For a team trying to build a tougher identity up front, Taylor has become more than a developmental lineman, he is now a real test of how quickly the Chargers culture can translate into dependable production when the pads stay on and the job gets serious. Chargers Just Made A Telling Training Camp Move At Edge
Training camp roster churn has pushed the Chargers into another look at the edge, and the latest move brings in a familiar developmental type for a team still sorting out depth up front. Andre Carter II, an undrafted free agent out of Army, arrives with the size and pass-rushing background that can make him an intriguing fit when teams are trying to find useful bodies around the quarterback.
To make room, the Chargers moved on from wide receiver Mante Morrow, another undrafted player who had been battling for attention in a crowded receiver room. It is the kind of mid-camp swap that says as much about roster math as it does about talent evaluation, but it also suggests the Chargers are willing to keep probing for help on the edge while the back end of the roster continues to take shape. Rashawn Slater's Camp Absence Has Chargers Fans Watching Closely
Rashawn Slaters training camp absence has become one of the more closely watched storylines around the Chargers, especially after the left tackle spent last season working back from a torn patellar tendon that ended his year. The team has been careful with him through camp, and the goal remains getting one of its most important offensive linemen ready for the regular season without pushing him too fast.
Slater has now missed three straight practices, which is enough to keep fans on edge even though there has not been any official sign of a new serious injury. The early concern that surfaced during the first padded practice has not turned into a confirmed setback, and for now the situation appears to be more about caution than alarm as the Chargers manage his recovery.
