Jason McCourty didn’t sugarcoat it when he talked about the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday. After their 0-6 start to the 2026 season, the former NFL defensive back sent a blunt message: avoid becoming the kind of perfect-season story nobody wants.
The Chargers are now one of only two winless teams left in the league, alongside the Miami Dolphins, after the Tennessee Titans beat the Indianapolis Colts 26-20 on Sunday. For McCourty, that place on the standings carries a heavy warning, especially because he lived through an 0-16 season with the Cleveland Browns in 2017.
Ahead of Monday night’s San Francisco 49ers-Washington Commanders game, ESPN’s Pat McAfee shared a clip on X, formerly Twitter, of McCourty speaking during Monday Night Countdown. McCourty said:
“I know what it feels like to go 0-for, 0-16 in 2017. Guys, find a way to win a game.
Congratulations to your Tennessee Titans @JasonMcCourty..

You don't want to be a part of that type of history. Even sunny days won't make you happy.
Find a way to win at least one game. Do not get a perfect season the wrong way.”
That warning landed after another rough Chargers performance, a 22-6 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday that dropped Los Angeles to 0-6 for the first time since 2000. That Chargers team, which had current head coach Jim Harbaugh at quarterback, finished 1-15.
The slide is especially jarring given what Los Angeles did in the previous two seasons, when it won 11 games in back-to-back years. Against Kansas City, the offense never got going. The Chargers finished with 259 total yards, didn’t score a touchdown and saw Justin Herbert get sacked four times.
Harbaugh addressed the offensive issues after the loss and said the team needs to take a hard look at every part of the operation, including first-year offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel.
The latest result also gave more context to McCourty’s concern. His former Titans team picked up its first win of 2026 to improve to 1-5, leaving the Chargers and Dolphins as the league’s only winless clubs. With Los Angeles headed into its Week 7 bye without a victory, the franchise is now staring at the same kind of unwanted company that included the 2017 Browns and 2008 Detroit Lions.

Chargers Fans Know Justin Herbert's Biggest Problem Goes Beyond One Coach
The early-season mess around Justin Herbert has become bigger than one coaching decision. The Chargers are 0-6, and the offense has been stuck in a rut marked by low scoring, shaky yardage production and too much pressure leaking through to Herbert. Injuries on the offensive line have only made the picture uglier, while the skill-position group has not delivered enough to help the quarterback out of repeated long-yardage situations.
Jim Harbaugh has publicly said Mike McDaniel is not in danger right now, but the conversation around the staff keeps circling back to whether a change would matter if the underlying problems stay the same. Fans watching this team know the frustration is not just about play-calling or one coachs future. It is about an offense that has been unable to protect Herbert or consistently give him the support needed to keep the Chargers from spiraling deeper. [Read more 🡒]
Chargers Have Reached The Breaking Point With Justin Herbert
The Chargers season has turned into an early crisis, with an 0-6 start exposing just how far the offense has to go under offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel. Scoring has been hard to come by, and the lack of touchdown production has left head coach Jim Harbaugh staring at a problem that cant wait much longer if the team wants to salvage anything from this year.
Justin Herbert still sits at the center of everything the Chargers hope to build, but his recent decision-making has only added to the pressure around the offense. With the play-calling under scrutiny and the unit still searching for rhythm, Harbaugh has to decide whether the answer is more patience or a change that could alter the direction of the season. Chargers Could Still Move An Unexpected Veteran Before The Deadline
With the trade deadline approaching, the Chargers are still being linked to a move involving veteran cornerback Donte Jackson, a player whose name fits the kind of short-term, value-driven decision teams start weighing this time of year. Los Angeles is in a position to think bigger than the present, with the first overall pick in the 2027 NFL Draft and a roster that could still be reshaped if the right offer comes along, which is why Jackson has surfaced alongside other possible trade pieces such as Khalil Mack, Quentin Johnston and David Njoku.
Jacksons appeal is easy to understand from a contenders point of view. His contract is expiring, and his recent ballhawking production has made him a plausible target for a team looking to add help in the secondary without a long commitment. The only real complication is his availability, since a hamstring injury has limited him to four games this season, leaving the Chargers with a veteran whose value may be easier to discuss than it is to measure.
