The Los Angeles Chargers’ quarterback situation has already stirred up enough noise this summer, and now an old familiar name has been dragged back into the conversation.
Behind Justin Herbert, Trey Lance and DJ Uiagalelei both had rough summers in the public eye, enough to make it fair to wonder whether the Chargers would go looking for more help at quarterback, even if that meant adding competition only on the practice squad. That hasn’t happened.
Uiagalelei landed on the practice squad, while Lance made the 53-man roster. The timing matters, too: bringing in a quarterback late in the summer is no easy task when he still has to learn the system, and Herbert’s backups already had a built-in edge because they know the offense, even with coordinator Mike McDaniel now in place.
Still, the idea machine keeps humming, especially with some movement around the league. That’s how J.J.
McCarthy’s name surfaced again in connection with the Chargers and Jim Harbaugh. Chargers fans know exactly why the link keeps coming up: McCarthy and Harbaugh are tied together through Michigan, and that connection has been a talking point before, especially in those quiet stretches of the summer when speculation tends to fill the vacuum.
This time, the chatter got a little more specific. McCarthy was not cut or traded in Minnesota around final cuts, with the Vikings instead going to Kyler Murray and Carson Wentz as the backup. Even so, Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox included a Chargers-McCarthy deal among his bold preseason trade predictions, with Los Angeles sending a 2028 fifth-round pick.
“The Los Angeles Chargers are one team that might be willing to take a chance on McCarthy,” Knox wrote. “L.A. has its starting quarterback in Justin Herbert, but it has a less-experienced backup in Trey Lance, who is also on a one-year deal.”
There is at least some recent history here. Back in 2024, Harbaugh clearly wasn’t satisfied with the backup setup and dealt for Taylor Heinicke at the end of August, right before the season.
So the logic behind another quarterback move isn’t hard to see. The Chargers could look for a long-term backup they can develop, especially if that player is comfortable understanding he’s not walking into a starting job. That kind of arrangement has worked before, or at least enough to keep the conversation alive.
McCarthy, though, comes with his own complications. He has had trouble staying healthy and has also struggled when he has been on the field. And with the media frenzy a Harbaugh reunion would create, that alone could be enough to make the whole thing feel like more trouble than it’s worth.
If the Chargers do go down this road, a quarterback other than McCarthy probably makes more sense.
