That gave Arizona a short field, and Brissett made the most of it with a three-yard touchdown pass to Trey McBride that stretched the lead to 23-14.
Herbert tried to answer, but his deep shot to Derius Davis ended in an interception. Arizona didn’t score off the turnover, but it did bleed clock before punting it back.
The Chargers then stacked up penalties and turned it over on downs, handing the Cardinals another short field. Arizona slowed things down again and added a field goal to make it 26-14.
Los Angeles still had one more chance to make it interesting, but that drive ended on downs as well, the third time the Chargers had failed to convert on fourth down in the game. Brissett finished it off with a pair of kneels as the clock ran out and Arizona closed out the win.
Jim Harbaugh’s Chargers start 0-1, while Arizona picked up its first victory under first-year head coach Mike Lafleur. The Chargers now head into next week needing a much sharper offensive performance, starting with offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel, after a Week 1 showing that never really found its footing.
