Chargers Add Former Lions Guard To Bolster Justin Herbert Protection

Chargers bolster their offensive line with versatile guard Kayode Awosika to enhance protection for star quarterback Justin Herbert.

In a strategic move just before MLB's Opening Day, the Los Angeles Chargers have bolstered their offensive line by signing free agent guard Kayode Awosika. Previously with the Detroit Lions, Awosika brings versatility and experience to the Bolts' roster.

Awosika, who started his NFL journey undrafted with the Philadelphia Eagles, spent two seasons there before making his mark with the Lions. His college days at Buffalo connect him with Chargers' star Khalil Mack, another proud alum.

During his tenure with the Lions, Awosika started four games last season and appeared in 13, logging a career-high 286 snaps in 2025. The Chargers highlight his flexibility, noting his ability to play both guard positions-624 snaps at left guard and 368 on the right. He's even stepped in at tackle, with 22 snaps at right tackle last season and some action at left tackle in 2024.

This addition is crucial for the Chargers as they aim to safeguard quarterback Justin Herbert. The 2026 season will see a revamped offensive line, with Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt returning from injuries and three new interior linemen joining the ranks. Alongside Awosika, Tyler Biadasz, Cole Strange, Trevor Penning, and Trey Pipkins-who's known for his versatility as a swing tackle-will form the core of this group.

While the Chargers are expected to seek additional talent in the upcoming draft, Awosika's signing is a promising step for Jim Harbaugh's team, setting the stage for a fortified offensive line.
