Broncos Win Over Chargers Suddenly Comes With A Bo Nix Concern

With play-calling duties shifting in Denver, concerns mount over Bo Nix's dipping performance as the Broncos face pressure to turn their offensive struggles around.

The Broncos got the win in Week 5, but the bigger conversation around Denver still points back to Bo Nix and an offense that hasn’t found its footing.

Sean Payton taking over play-calling duties from coordinator Davis Webb was the headline before Denver’s trip to the winless Los Angeles Chargers. The Broncos left with a 23-17 victory and moved to 3-2, but Nix did not exactly quiet the questions about what’s going on with his game.

Fox Sports NFL insider Ralph Vacchiano zeroed in on what he called Nix’s “mysterious” regression after the Broncos’ run to last season’s AFC Championship Game.

"Maybe he’s still recovering from the broken ankle he suffered this past January, but he’s basically turned himself into a relative statue in the pocket, incapable of making plays on the run like he did in the past," Vacchiano wrote about Nix. "Worse, he’s become a game-manager - and not a very good one.

In the past three games, he’s completed just 56.3% of his passes. He was 16-of-27 (59.3%) for 123 yards as Denver squeaked by the 0-5 Chargers."

Nix broke a bone in his right ankle in the divisional round of the playoffs this past January, and the numbers since then haven’t looked like the version of him Denver saw as a rookie. Pro-Football-Reference had him ranked 23rd among qualified players Monday with a 43.1 adjusted QBR and 25th with an 80.8 passer rating on the season.

The rushing production tells part of the same story. Nix has only 35 rushing yards so far this year, a far cry from the 430 he put up as a rookie and the 356 he finished the 2025 campaign with.

And it’s not as if the quarterback is carrying the offense on his own while the ground game hums along behind him. ESPN stats had the Broncos 25th in the league with 86.2 rushing yards per game and 26th with 19.4 points per game entering the week.

Vacchiano pointed directly at that lack of balance.

"It doesn’t help that the Broncos can’t run the ball," Vacchiano continued. "They weren’t great in that department last season, either, but the duo of J.K.

Dobbins (229 yards in five games) and R.J. Harvey (56 yards) aren’t packing much of a punch. ...

The running game may truly be unfixable at this point, but Payton has to figure out a way to get Nix going. If not, his offense isn’t going to get going at all, and the Broncos won’t be the Super Bowl contenders they thought they were going to be."

Denver won’t get much breathing room before the next test. The Broncos host the 3-2 Seattle Seahawks on Thursday night, and as of Monday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook had Denver as a three-point home underdog against the reigning Super Bowl champions.

Chargers Add New Justin Herbert Insurance At A Brutal Time

The Chargers have added another quarterback to the room, signing former Bengals backup Jake Browning, according to NFL insider Tom Pelissero. For a team built around Justin Herbert, it is the kind of transaction that usually flies under the radar, but at this point in the season every depth move carries a little more weight than usual.

Browning brings some game experience with him, having appeared in 17 career games and thrown for 2,702 yards with 18 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. What the Chargers do with him next is still being sorted out, since it is not yet clear whether he will land on the active roster or the practice squad. [Read more 🡒]

Justin Herbert Questions Grow After Chargers Make Sudden QB Move

The Chargers are making a quick quarterback addition ahead of Sundays game against the Chiefs, signing veteran Jake Browning as they try to steady the position for the immediate future. Browning arrives with NFL experience from his previous stops with the Vikings and Bengals, giving Los Angeles another arm on the roster as the matchup with Kansas City approaches.

The move has only added to the questions around Justin Herbert, whose 2026 season has been well below the standard expected from the teams franchise quarterback. Still, a team source said the organization has never even discussed trading Herbert, which keeps the focus on how the Chargers plan to navigate the short term rather than on any wholesale change at the top of the depth chart. Chiefs Trade Idea Would Fix A Big Need And Sting A Rival

The Chiefs are heading into their Week 6 matchup with the Chargers coming out of a bye, and they are also being talked about as a team that could keep adding before the trade deadline. Kansas City already made a move for wide receiver Justin Watson, and the conversation around the roster now includes defense, where one of the most recognizable names in the division has surfaced as a possible fit for the reigning AFC powers.

Bleacher Reports Alex Kay floated Khalil Mack as a target, a suggestion that would instantly grab attention around both teams. Mack is on a one-year deal and could be viewed as a manageable rental if the Chargers continue to stumble, which only adds to the intrigue for a division rival looking to patch a need while making life a little more uncomfortable for Los Angeles.
