Los Angeles Chargers rookie wide receiver Brenen Thompson has wasted little time making noise at training camp, and it’s not just because of the stopwatch. The 23-year-old has drawn steady praise from teammates and coaches as he tries to break into a deep receiver group, with his speed, preparation and buy-in all standing out early.
Thompson entered Los Angeles carrying the label of one of the fastest players in the 2026 NFL Draft class after clocking a 4.26-second 40-yard dash at the combine. That part of his game has shown up immediately. But inside the building, the talk has gone beyond pure speed.
"Absolutely. I came here to contribute [and] to make this team better, and so whether that's blocking, running, special teams-whatever it is-I'm going to put my best foot forward," Thompson said.
That attitude has clearly landed well with the Chargers.
New Bolts offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel said Thompson has "captured the attention of the quarterback room" during camp, and pointed to the rookie’s approach as the most impressive part of his early run.
"His professional approach has stood out," McDaniel said. "The most impressive part has been his professional attack and ownership of assignment."
Quentin Johnston has seen the same thing from the receiver room. He said Thompson showed up with his biggest calling card front and center.
"He came in with one thing on his mind-speed," Johnston said. "Shoot, you've seen his 40 time, seen what he did in college. He's brought that to the league, to this team."
Johnston also made it clear Thompson is already showing more than straight-line burst.
"On the field, he shows his speed, shows his ball-catching abilities, stuff like that," Johnston said. "He's been a fun guy to be around."
Thompson, for his part, isn’t pretending otherwise when it comes to what makes him dangerous.
"I know my speed is pretty much unmatched when I step out on the field," he said.
And yes, even the man who runs like a blur admits he’d rather not spend all day doing it.
"I really hate running, but I'm really good at it," he said.
Head coach Jim Harbaugh has liked the rookie’s start as well.
"We're all seeing the same thing," Harbaugh said. "Much like Akheem [Mesidor], so far so good."
The strongest backing may have come from Justin Herbert. The Chargers quarterback said Thompson has already shown enough to suggest a real role is coming.
"He's gonna be very good," Herbert said. "We saw it early on that he was gonna be.
He's skilled. He's fast.
He's gonna make a lot of plays for us."
For a rookie trying to find his place, Thompson is checking a lot of boxes at once: vertical speed, special teams value and a willingness to help in the run game. That combination is giving him a real shot to earn snaps, and based on the early buzz, the Chargers may have more than just a burner on their hands.
