Nimmala keeps giving Rocket City a glimpse of why he sits atop the Angels’ prospect list.
On Thursday at Toyota Field, the 20-year-old shortstop launched the first pitch he saw in the ninth inning the opposite way to right-center for his second homer in three games. It came too late for the Trash Pandas, though, who dropped a 6-2 decision to Montgomery.
Nimmala, the headlining piece in the trade that sent José Soriano to the Blue Jays, has wasted little time making noise in his new organization. He has reached base safely in 18 of his first 19 games since the deal and added a walk Thursday, pushing his on-base percentage with Rocket City to .379.
The power is the calling card, and it showed again. Nimmala’s 60-grade pop has now produced three home runs since he joined the Angels’ system, giving him seven total in 52 Double-A games this season when you include his time before the trade. He’s also driven in 21 runs and posted an .807 OPS.
What makes the early stretch even more notable is the way he’s handled the jump. Nimmala has spent much of his minor league career taking on pitchers older than him, and he’s been doing it again in Double-A.
A hamstring injury slowed him after his first promotion to the level, but he’s settling in with Rocket City. There’s chase in his profile, yet he’s been on base often enough to pair 17 walks with 19 strikeouts across his first 19 games after the trade.
