Expectations aren't exactly sky-high for the Los Angeles Angels this season, and a glance at their Opening Day lineup gives us some clues why. While Mike Trout's return to center field is bound to steal the spotlight, it's Yoan Moncada's spot in the lineup that might have Angels fans scratching their heads.
Leading off is shortstop Zach Neto, followed by the ever-reliable Trout and first baseman Nolan Schanuel. Jorge Soler, who showed promising form in camp, will take the cleanup spot against the Houston Astros. But Moncada, batting fifth, raises some eyebrows and questions about the team's strategy.
Here's how the Angels are lining up:
- Zach Neto - SS
- Mike Trout - CF
- Nolan Schanuel - 1B
- Jorge Soler - DH
- Yoan Moncada - 3B
- Jo Adell - RF
- Josh Lowe - LF
- Logan O'Hoppe - C
- Oswald Peraza - 2B
Moncada wasn't the Angels' first pick for third base this year. Offseason buzz swirled around various trade targets and free agents. In the end, Moncada was one of the few willing to join Anaheim for a price the Angels could handle.
Despite Moncada's unexpected placement, the Angels did bring Jeimer Candelario into the mix with a minor-league deal. Candelario impressed during spring training, hitting .235/.339/.588 with nine extra-base hits, including four homers. His .927 OPS was a stark contrast to Moncada's .594.
If the Angels stick with Moncada regularly, especially in such a pivotal batting position, fans might be in for a challenging season. Candelario, despite his struggles with the Reds last year, seems like he could be a more reliable option.
Following Moncada in the lineup, manager Kurt Suzuki has right fielder Jo Adell, left fielder Josh Lowe, and catcher Logan O'Hoppe. Rounding out the lineup is Oswald Peraza at second base.
First pitch is set for 1:10 p.m. PDT. Angels fans, get ready-it could be a bumpy ride this season.
