José Soriano’s breakout first half made him one of the most sought-after arms on the market, and now he’s on the move. According to multiple reports, the Angels have traded the right-hander to the Toronto Blue Jays ahead of Monday’s deadline, with Jeff Passan of ESPN.com first reporting the deal.
The return gives Anaheim a package built around three prospects: shortstop Arjun Nimmala, outfielder Eddie Micheletti Jr. and right-hander Angel Rivero.
For the Angels, the move does more than just clear out Soriano after a strong four-year run in Anaheim. It also plants them firmly in seller mode with the 3 p.m.
PT deadline approaching. The club has been reluctant to embrace any sort of rebuild in recent years under owner Arte Moreno, but with interim GM John Mozeliak in charge, that posture appears to have changed.
Nimmala, 20, is the headliner. He’s a consensus Top-100 prospect and reached Double-A for the first time this season with the New Hampshire FisherCats.
In 33 games there, he hit .279/.355/.451. The 2023 first-round pick - 20th overall - has also been steady defensively, posting a .946 fielding percentage over 403.1 innings at shortstop across all levels.
He’s been especially productive against lefties, reaching base safely in 27 of 33 games with New Hampshire and batting .417 (10/24) with a 1.295 OPS versus left-handed pitching.
Micheletti, 24, spent most of his time in right field for New Hampshire and put together a solid offensive season, hitting .251/.347/.454 over 93 games. He finished tied for second in the Eastern League in triples, tied for seventh in runs with 60 and extra-base hits with 38, and ranked 10th in total bases with 157.
He also kept the strikeouts in check, fanning in just 17.5% of his plate appearances, the ninth-best rate in the league. Toronto drafted the Wilmington, Delaware native in the eighth round of the 2024 Draft out of Virginia Tech.
Rivero, 19, adds another arm to the mix. He made 12 appearances, nine of them starts, for the FCL Blue Jays this season and went 0-1 with a 2.36 ERA and 52 strikeouts in 42 innings.
That strikeout total led the FCL Blue Jays, and he also paced the club in starts and innings pitched in 2026. His 52 strikeouts tied for fifth-most in the Florida Complex League, and he finished the season on a 17.2-inning scoreless streak, postseason included.
Baseball America ranked Rivero among the top 20 prospects in the FCL at the end of the 2026 season. A native of Cumana, Venezuela, he began his pro career with the DSL Blue Jays after signing with Toronto as an international free agent on Jan. 15, 2024.
