Let's explore some celebrated restaurants that originated in Sonoma County and have since expanded, becoming iconic parts of the local dining landscape.

Legendary Chains with Five or More Locations

Mary’s Pizza Shack

In 1959, New York City transplant Mary Fazio brought her Italian family's secret recipes to Sonoma County with the first Mary’s Pizza Shack. Fast forward to today, Mary’s legacy thrives with ten locations across Sonoma, Napa, and Solano counties.

Despite filing for bankruptcy in September 2024, the family-owned business, now in the capable hands of the third and fourth generations, continues to serve up its beloved pizzas. Among the favorites is the “Mary’s BIG Spaghetti and Pizza Meal Deal”—ideal for sharing the love of Italian cuisine with family and friends, just as Mary intended.

El Roy’s

From a successful start with a taco truck in Marin County, siblings Yvette Vega, and Roy and Fernando Cabrera took their venture to new heights with El Roy’s Mexican Grill in Petaluma in 2016. The catchy allure of their taco trucks, including El Roy’s Express Mex, has seen them crowned the “best taco truck” in the county for several consecutive years. Though the original Petaluma restaurant shuttered in January, anticipation brews for their new establishment in South Santa Rosa.

Costeaux French Bakery

A true classic in artisanal baking, Costeaux French Bakery began as a 1920s-era bakery in Healdsburg. It was Jean and Anne Costeaux who, after taking the reins in 1973, began a transformative journey that saw their sourdough baguettes and gourmet pastries rake in awards and acclaim.

Today, led by the Seppi family, Costeaux’s delectable offerings extend to Healdsburg, Sonoma County Airport, and Petaluma. Meanwhile, Tía María, their sister bakery, delights with Mexican treats in Roseland.

Popular with Three to Four Locations

Bianchini’s Sandwich & Salad Market

Bryan Crane continues a family tradition with Bianchini’s, which launched in Petaluma in 2009. In addition to the salad and sandwich haven, Crane’s family touch has brought forth two more locations. Renowed for customization, their deli is the go-to for anyone craving a delicious grab-and-go meal or a creatively crafted sandwich, boasting options such as the roasted turkey breast with avocado.

Fruta Ice Cream

Salvador Cruz, inspired by his roots in Mexico, embarked on a sweet venture in Santa Rosa in 2010. His vision of sharing traditional flavors with the community has grown into four vibrant locations offering not just classic ice creams, but also Mexican paletas and unique creations like Takislocos. Fruta’s adventure through time has delighted those in search of both nostalgic and novel dessert experiences.

HopMonk Tavern

Dean Biersch, co-founder of Gordon Biersch, envisioned a new kind of neighborhood hangout when he opened HopMonk Tavern in 2008 in Sebastopol. With its hallmarks of craft beer, great food, and live music, the tavern has expanded its embrace with a location in Petaluma's historic Twin Oaks Roadhouse. Its menu, featuring Nashville hot fried chicken and an enticing range of entrees, satisfies every appetite.

Mombo’s Pizza

Paying homage to the unbeatable taste of New York-style pizza, late founder Fred Poulos started Mombo’s in 2002. A favorite among Sonoma County college students, Mombo’s has grown to four locations, with Andrew Peletz carrying the torch. Mombo’s continues to win hearts with its thin-crust perfection, offering local favorites like Mombo Pesto and Mushroom Cloud pizzas.

Acme Burger

Chef Todd Kniess shifted from French fine dining to creating sensational burgers when he opened Acme Burger in Cotati in 2019. With an emphasis on fresh, local ingredients, Acme has expanded to three locations, bringing burger bliss to more patrons. Known for its Sonoma Beef Burger, Acme effortlessly elevates the classic American meal with its attention to quality and taste.

Celebrating Unique Flavors and Traditions

Other gems include Angela’s Organic Ice Cream, adored for its exciting flavors and community feel, and Amy’s Drive Thru, a pioneer in vegetarian fast food in the region. Cafe Mimosa elevates brunch with bottomless mimosas, and Acre Pizza captivates with its New York and Detroit-style pies. Meanwhile, breweries like HenHouse and Crooked Goat offer exceptional craft beers, truly celebrating the local spirit.

Sonoma County’s homegrown restaurant chains capture this region's culinary magic, blending tradition with innovation while staying true to their roots. Whether it's a delicious burger, a savory slice, or a sweet treat, these eateries are not just contributing to the local palate—they're shaping the very essence of community dining here.
