Ravens Stun NFL By Signing Trey Hendrickson After Backing Out of Trade

After reneging on a Maxx Crosby trade due to medical concerns, the Ravens secure top defensive talent Trey Hendrickson with a lucrative four-year deal.

In a surprising turn of events, the Baltimore Ravens have shifted gears after initially planning to trade for the Raiders' standout pass rusher, Maxx Crosby. Instead, they’ve secured a deal with Trey Hendrickson, the former Cincinnati Bengals edge rusher, according to NFL insider Jonathan Jones. Hendrickson's four-year contract is reportedly worth $112 million.

Hendrickson was a hot commodity in this free agency class, ranked as the No. 2 free agent by CBS Sports. Despite this, he remained unsigned during the initial negotiation period, with his camp initially seeking $35 million annually. Meanwhile, other big deals have been made, like Jaelan Phillips' $120 million contract with the Carolina Panthers and Odafe Oweh's $100 million deal with the Washington Commanders.

For the Ravens, Hendrickson brings proven talent to their defense. A four-time Pro Bowler, he stays within the AFC North, adding extra motivation when facing his former team, the Bengals.

Cincinnati initially recognized Hendrickson's potential in 2021, signing him to a $60 million deal after a standout 14-sack season that helped propel them to the Super Bowl. Despite his impressive performance, securing a long-term contract with the Bengals proved elusive.

After signing a one-year extension in 2023, Hendrickson delivered with 17.5 sacks, repeating this feat the following season to lead the NFL. Yet, Cincinnati opted for a one-year, $30 million salary in 2025 rather than a long-term commitment. This offseason, Hendrickson finally found the opportunity to secure a more extended deal.

With 74.5 sacks over the last six seasons, Hendrickson ranks among the top in the league. While others like T.J. Watt and Myles Garrett have cashed in earlier, Hendrickson now has his payday and is focused on chasing a Super Bowl.

Initially, the Ravens seemed to have locked in Maxx Crosby, agreeing to a trade involving two first-round picks. However, concerns arose during Crosby's physical, prompting Baltimore to back out. The Ravens were within their rights to do so, as deals aren’t official until the new league year begins.

Crosby had undergone surgery on his left knee's meniscus, requiring a lengthy recovery. The Ravens' decision to pivot to Hendrickson might raise eyebrows, but they are clearly prioritizing immediate impact and long-term security.

Hendrickson will also need to pass a physical, having recently undergone core muscle surgery. His addition to the Ravens' roster is a significant move, bringing a proven pass rusher without the steep cost of draft picks.

The situation with Crosby does spark curiosity. Did the Ravens have second thoughts, or was it purely a medical decision? While Crosby's talent is undeniable, with 69.5 sacks in his career and a reputation as a relentless defensive end, his recent health issues may have given the Ravens pause.

Regardless, Hendrickson's arrival in Baltimore marks a new chapter for the Ravens' defense, one that could have a big impact in the AFC North.
